Behind The Scenes
When Jimmy, Lee and Spike had a big photo shoot recently who do
you think they asked along? 911 Official of course.
Jimmy fills us in on the gossip.
What was the photo shoot for?
-It was for the cover of the greatest hits album, a cover for the next
single and some other shots for our press officer, Liz, so she can send
them out to magazines.
Greatest hits! Oh no, that doesn't mean...
-No way! What we're working on at the minute is a title for the album
which shows that it's a greatest hits but also says that it's just step one.
Obviously people are going to assume it means we're breaking up
because that's what band's normally do. But we're doing this because
when you have a greatest hits you need to have 12 or 13 tracks on it,
but by the time we do our official greatest hits we'll probably have had
another album out and we'll have more like 20 hits which would be too many.
So what we're doing putting one out now then, fingers crossed, we can
do another one in a couple of years time.
That's OK then. What else can you tell us about it?
-Well, it will probably be out the end of October. It will have 13 of our hits
on it plus two new ones - Wonderland and another one we haven't decided
yet. It should be good.
Who picks the clothes for photo shoots?
-We have a guy called Stuart Weir, he's a stylist and he hires all the
clothes for us - he usually brings two huge rails with him, different shirts,
jumpers, trousers and jackets then we just choose what we want to wear.
Do you ever argue about who wears what?
-No because everyone's got their own taste. Style wise I like the smarter
look, Lee likes the casual look and Spike doesn't care less! There's no
need to argue because there's so much stuff anyway - there's loads of
to choose from.
How do you decide which pictures will be used?
-What we normally do is play this little game where we each have
different coloured stickers. Everyone goes through the photographs and
puts their colour on the pictures they like. If everyone picks the same
shots then that will be a definite, if it gets two stickers it will be a contender
and we break it down that way. I looked at the shoots from this shoot
the other day and there must have been more than a thousand
photographs. It's impossible to choose.
What are you looking for in the pictures? Do you just pick the one's you
look best in?
-Well first of all you think "I'm happy with the way I look on that," but then
you also have to make sure the others aren't blinking or doing
something else.
Will you still be doing magazine shoots when the album comes out?
-We'll do some but I'll be honest and say we won't do as many as we
used to because there comes a time when you haven't got time.
Do you have more control over the shoots you do for magazines now?
-It's not a case of control. Our press officer knows now what to say no
and what to say yes to. Not because we're being awkward but I think
we've gone past the point of doing really cheesy stuff. We're no where
near Boyzone's level where they can totally pick and choose but
in order to get there you have to be seen to be trying to do it.
What's the most embarrassing thing you've had to do on a shoot?
It was probably (thinks a bit)...we did a Christmas one where Lee was
dressed up as Father Christmas and we were actually inside and
these sacks! Another one which comes close was when we had to dress
up in lion and tiger suits. It's all part and parcel of the job though!
Do you ever feel silly when you have to pose and look moody?
Yeah, but you get used to it. It's hard sometimes when there are lots
of people about but at the end of the day it's just something you have to
do so you just do it.
When you see the pictures do you always think "'Wow, I look really great"?
Ha ha, no not always! This time round the pictures are superb,
unbelievable. The guy that took them, Dean Freeman, he's done the
Spice Girls and he did the pictures for Lock Stock and Two Smoking
Barrels. He's excellent, he really knows what he's doing. You do
sometimes think you look good but it's also a case of make-up and
getting the lighting right - that can make a big difference!
So did you have fun?
It was the most relaxed shoot we've ever done, normally everyone is
running around like headless chickens making sure everything is right
but this one was really laid back. It was one of the best shoots
I've ever done.
