Lime:
How's it going Jimbo! 'A Little Bit More' went No1
in UK
recently - 911's first UK chart topper since you were formed. Who was
the first person you called when you found out ?
Jimmy Constable: We called our moms! We were in Ireland doing a TV
show and everybody was on the mobile phones for a minute, spreading
the good news!
Lime: What was the first thought that popped into your minds ?
Jimmy Constable: Mostly relief. We've worked hard and
had songs going No 2 and No 3.
We wanted to prove a lot of people wrong, show we could do it!
Lime: It must
have been tough watching band like Five, Steps and B*witched
hit No1 so early in their careers...
Jimmy Constable: Obviously, we've waited for this No1
for so many years. The
difference with the other bands is they got their No1's straightaway,
but we've got more singles out. With 911, everything we've achieved
is through hard work. It has been this way since the begining, when
nobody was interested in us!
Lime: We read
that Five declared themselves the biggest pop group in
Britain! What do you say to that?
Jimmy Constable: (Shocked silence) I think they need to
take a good hard look at
everyone else before they say that, really. There are a lot of other boybands around, like
Boyzone. Five has been given everything on a plate by their record company,
everything had been so easy for them. if they are happy saying that, then fine, but in my
opinion, and in a lot of other people's opinoins, they're nowhere near.
Lime: What's
911's musical direction now?
Jimmy Constable: Our music always had a good variety,
like pop, R&B, ballads, soul...it's just a little more mature now. Our manager Neil
has been in the music business for years, he knows everybody! He's a really nice guy,
every decision he makes, he goes through us and makes sure everybody is happy.
(Gratefully) If Neil wasn't on our side, we wouldn't be what we are now. We've had quite a
bit of success over the years but it got to a point when we came to the end of our two
albums [The Journey and Moving On]and we needed a new direction. Neil definitely played a
big part in that.
Lime: Are you coming to Singapore and
Malaysia soon to promote your new
album There It Is ?
Jimmy Constable: (Apologetically) When we split with our
management, we had to go to a lot of meetings, talk to our lawyers...the court case is
still
going on! We haven't been touring anywhere. But I know that we're
coming to Southeast Asia in the summer, I've got a diary, hang on!
(Disapears for half a minute) Hello? Okay...da dum de da...here!
(Reads from it) Southeast Asian tour from secong week of June till
July. How's that?
Lime: Fantastic!
Malaysia must be your most supportive market-your songs
are on the radio there all the time! Do you have any special memories
of your Malaysian fans ?
Jimmy Constable: Before we came to Malaysia, we weren't
sure what kind of songs they liked. On the day we landed, our album The Journey went No1
and there were a couple thousand of fans at the airport ! It was brilliant ! The
nicest thing is when they come to our concerts, they bring their
whole family along! Their moms and dads know all our songs, too !
Probably because their kids are playing our CDs all all day ! Haha !
Lime: Listen,
we're sorry your private lives was dragged through the
tabloids recently when it was revealed you had a son. Wanna clarify
anything to your fans here ?
Jimmy Constable: I think a lot of things have
been...(Changes his mind)I guess, well, a lot of people found out I've got a little lad.
His mom is married now, we don't go out anymore. See, I wasn't hiding it from anybody,
but this is a private thing. Obviously the press got hold of it -
that's the way they are. My lad needs to go through all that life without having all that
attention, it's bad for him.
Lime: You
having a kid doesn't change the way we feel about you - tell us more about the little tyke
!
Jimmy Constable: (Touched)Aww...I know most people don't
mind but most folks think I was hiding it from them. But it was basically just to protect
him.You know, the paparazzi would track him to the playground and he's affected at school.
That's not a nice thing. (Cheers up)My boy's name
is Scott and he's seven. Before, he didn't understand why there were
people taking my photographs and wanting my autographs. Now, he knows
- he sees me on TV!
Lime: Does he
want to be a pop star, too?
Jimmy Constable: I think so, he knows a lot of our
songs. (Getting all fatherly) He can sing 'Love Sensation' and 'More Than a Woman' at the
karaoke !
Lime: And
what's this about lying about your age ! How old are 911, really?
Jimmy Constable: That was our old management's idea.
When we first started out, they wanted to take a few years off our age. We were busy with
our music
so we just let them decide and we were stuck ! I'm actually glad that
somebody found out the truth, it was tiresome pretending all the
time ! Our real ages? I'm 27, Lee is 25, and Spike is 24.
Lime: What kind
of relationship do you have with the British tabloids?
Jimmy Constable: They need to come up with different
stories everyday so they set themselves against you sometimes. But they're not that bad,
it's
their job and they're paid to do it. It's not just a simple package
in the music industry, there are a lot of things you have to go along
with. Yes, writing good music is important but the press plays a big
part. They hype you up and they can knock you down. (Weary sigh) It's
all one big game.
Lime: What's
the silliest rumour you've heard of yourself?
Jimmy Constable: That I was dating this actress [Divina
Murphy]from UK soap
Hollyoaks. She was seeing [ManU star] Ryan Giggs and the press popped
me on the front page saying that I was going out with Ryan Giggs'
girl ! I'd never even met her before ! I don't know where they got the
story from. (Bitterly) But the tabloids, they don't care, they just
cause trouble for everybody.
Lime: Does it
scare you that bands like Code Red and OTT can drop out of
the scene so easily? By the way, do you know that Code Red are back
and under a different label now?
Jimmy Constable: (Sympathetically) Yeah, it's a shame
about Code Red 'cos we started about the same time and we've toured with them. In this
business, we
don't meet nice bands all the time but that's what Code Red are, very
down-to-earth. Are they back again? Really? That'd be good news ! You're
gonna talk to them soon ? Great ! Say hello to them for me !
Lime: Be
totally honest now ! Which do you dig: Oasis or Blur ?
Jimmy Constable: Oasis. They've done more stuff !
Lime: George
Micheal or Micheal Jackson ?
Jimmy Constable: Micheal Jackson. Beat performer on
stage.
Lime: Gucci or
Levi's ?
Jimmy Constable: Gucci. Makes you look really smart.
Lime: Boxers or
briefs ?
Jimmy Constable: (Giggles)Boxers. Calvin Kleins.
Lime: Pamela
Anderson or Gillian Anderson ?
Jimmy Constable: (Thinks hard)Ooh...Pamela Anderson. For
obvious reasons. Heh heh !
