Raffe Welsh and Marchington

They sound like a firm of solicitors but actually it's 911 booking into

a hotel! Mr. G. Raffe (Lee), Mr. Marchington (Spike) and

Mr. Welsh (Jimmy) have got a new single, a tour and

a Greatest Hits album coming your way...

How long have you been using assumed names?

Spike: A long time. We always use different names.Jimmy-Mr. Welsh

We change them whenever the fans finds out.

Family and friends just ring us on the mobile.

Lee: I've been a giraffe for five months now, so I guess

I'll have to change it.

Now that you've gone and blown our cover!

Jimmy: We've having so much fun with the names.

Sometimes we forget who we all are! "There's a Mr. Black

on the phone?" somebody will say and I'll say, "Who?".

Does it freak you out that fans always manage to find out

where you're staying?

Spike: We're used to it now. We know the girls are going to find out

eventually. It used to be weird when we first started.

The girls were more obsessed then. They'd phone up the record

company and say things like, "And which hotel should we

deliver the flowers to..."

Lee: I think fans of any group always find out some way

or another-whether it be from record companies or TV pluggers.

Jimmy: I know every trick in the book. The fans have all got mobile

phones and cars and it's like a network where they all keep in touch

with each other like round-the-clock police surveillance.

What's the freakest thing fans have ever done?

Spike: One girl tied herself to our car so we couldn't drive away.

Lee: That was at a Radio One roadshow in Southport.

The girl just wanted to make sure she met us.

She tired herself to the wheel of the car and we couldn't move.

If she'd tied herself to the roofrack we could at least have driven away

and still had a chat with her. She could have had a nice little spin

up the motorway!

Jimmy: Everyone has their own obsessive fan individually and I've got

one who's really nice. Well, she is my mum. Only joking.

What are your Mystic Meg predictions for the new footie season?

Spike: I reckon Man United will win two things. They'll win the

Premiership and the World Club Championship.

I've just got a feeling about it.

Lee: I think Arsenal will win the FA Cup. And my football team

-Carlisle-might get a play-off this season, it's a step up from second

bottom last season.

Jimmy: Livepool have had six signings over the summer,

but I think we should get rid of the manager.

Spike-Mr. MarchingtonIs the Arena tour going to be a big Spetacular show?

Spike: We're putting a lot into it, as we usually do. We're

going to have dancers, big theatrical sets and costume

changes. Can't tell you too much. I don't want to spoil

it to everyone

Your new album Grestest Hit & A Little Bit More is out in October.

will this mark a change in direction?

Spike: Yeah, we've been writing a lot of new songs recently.

Another new album should be coming out pretty soon after the

Greatest Hits. We're gald to get away from the covers band thing.

It was a good idea at the time because we needed to bring out an

album. When we changed management we needed to keep the music coming

out to Keep us in the public eye.

Lee: Maybe some of the people who didn¡¦t like the covers,

but liked our earlier stuff, will enjoy the new songs,

like the single Wonderland.

We knew when we did the covers that people would say,

"They don't have any original stuff." But wait till they hear the new stuff.

Will you be hanging out with your old mate Moylesy on the

Radio One Roadshow?

Spike: Yeah, we're on the Roadshow. I haven't seen Chris Moyles for a while,

actually. We go out for a drink a lot.

He rang me the other week and asked me what was going on.

We are mates-even though we pretend we're not.

That's why we always end up doing his roadshows.

You'll find that every Radio One date we do, it's for old Molyesy!

Jimmy: I haven't seen Molyest in ages. I haven't spoken to him on the

phone for ages either. I normally give him a ring. I think the reason we

get on is because we're basically just normal lads. There's no

pretentiousness. Same with our other mates, the Bee Gees.

The lads are so nice. We felt very comfortable chatting with them.

They treat you as normal people, like themselves, and have a laugh

with you.

Where did you go on your hols this summer?Lee-Mr. G.Raffe

Spike: I went to Cyprus about a month and a half ago,

just for a week. I went with my mate. The band all went

off separately-it's good to get a break from each other

now and again. No matter where we go, a lot of people

recognise us. You just know you've got to sign

autographs, but it was good fun all the same.

Lee: I went on holidays to exotic Carlisle, I've just been doing normal

things at home, really, like shopping and driving about town.

Jimmy: I went to Portugal. I didn't actually get a chance to play golf there,

though I do a lot at home. I love golf.

Why do you think Scott from 5ive and Lee from Steps have decided

to admit they have girlfriends?

Spike: I think they got caught, didn't they! I think that's what it was.

We've never said we don't have girlfriends. I think when you're starting out

you're more liable to say you don't have a girlfriend. You have to play it

safe until you become established-you don't want fans to turn against you.

I don't have a girlfriend. I just go out and enjoy myself.

Lee: I admit that I've got a girlfriend. But I don't like to talk about her

because I want to keep something private for me. I think Stephen Gately

handled his story well and the press and fans have been right behind him,

it's great to have the backing of fans. I think it's got to that stage for us now

where people like us and accept we have other people in our lives.

Jimmy: It's all about timing; not hiding things, or being deliberately evasive.

In the very early days you need everything on your side. And although

you're not trying to turn away from the fans, you just want

everything to go your way.

Have any of you guys splashed out on things you're really wanted

now that you have mega-loads of money?

Spike: I haven't splashed out as in wasted the money. I haven't really

spent much at all; you don't really get much time.

The other lads have got good cars and I'm about to buy a house, but

that's all.

Jimmy: I bought a nice car. Now I'm house hunting. It's kind of

funny talking to your bank manager about a mortage and saying,

"Yeah, I've got a steady income-if we have another hit!".

How have you changed since becoming successful?

Spike: I think we've got more grown up and become more wise to

the music business. It's easier now than when we first started. We're not

working as hard as we used to when we first made it.

We've got a life outside of 911 now.

Where do you see yourself in the next century?

Spike: Probably still doing the same thing. We're having a good laugh.

We'll still be the same lads.

Jimmy: Gliding up the street on a hoverboard and wearing a

McDonald's uniform. We'll all be wearing McDonald's uniforms in

the future. No, I'll probably be producing other bands with my own

recording studio. And I might even have time to fit in a few

rounds of golf.
