Angra was founded in 1991. Andre Matos and Rafeal Bittencourt knew eachother from the music college. The proposal of the band was to play heavy metal with classical influences, but in the beginning it was hard to define the style. The first line up was with Luis Mariutti, Kiko Loureiro and Marco Antunes besides Andre and Rafael. The name 'Angra' is taken from the Brazilian Tupynikins mythology and it means 'Goddess of Fire': an image of beauty but also of devastating power.
In 1992 the demo 'Reaching Horizons' was released. Soon after the release Angra got a contract to record the first album.
A few days before the start of the recordings of the first album, Marco Antunes left the band. The drums on 'Angels Cry' (1993) were palyed by Sieges Even drummer Alex Holzwarth. Ricardo Confessori took over the place of Marco.
'Angels Cry' got great reviews from magazines all over the world. In Japan only they sold more than 95.000 albums!!! After one year playing festivals, Angra started writing the second album 'Holy Land'. This album was released in 1996 after 4 months writing and 5 months recording. 'Holy Land' got better reviews than 'Angels Cry' and Angra has become a recommended band all over the world.
In 1997 'Holy Live' was released. This is a live album recorded during a show of the Holy Tour in paris, France. 1998 was the year of the recording of their third studio album 'Fireworks'. this album is produced by Chris Tsangrides. Before the release in September there was a release of a single called 'Lisbon' (June 1998). There are rumors going about the release of a video soon.
