Sarah Masen's re:think debut is a welcome surprise in the midst of many a mediocre CD from Christian artists. Sarah comes across with songs worthy of an audience, and lyrics to match. They are something like a union of the Cranberries soulful sound and the poignant lyrics of Alanis Morsette, but it is not just another remanufactured alternative-folk-rock album. These songs have real bite.

They include musings on the universal need for grace (All Fall Down,) our freedom in Christ (Break Hard The Wishbone,) and finding peace in the midst of our daily existance (Tuesday.)

While any number of artists in this so called Gen-X might be persuing music of a similar vein, what sets hers apart is the genuine feeling of hopefullness expressed in her music. Beauty, wonder, even joy are given voice in her writing, faith is a recurrent theme, and the struggle that she expresses is one that we can all identify with, to one degree or another. These daily struggles are what seems to have directed her lyrically the most in her most searching songs.

The bottom line is this: these songs show us Sarah interacting on a basic, everyday, person-to-person level. Her songs speak of a Christ who is available and ready, on a personal level, to minister to his chosen. There is no sugar coating here. There are the struggles, the anger, the pain of living day to day, but these songs express a hope that reaches into our lives and forever changes them.
