Club Exit eZine Reviews
The project, which combines the talents of the members of U2 with Brian Eno, Luciano Pavorotti, DJ Howie B, and Holi, contains tracks written for non-mainstream films. The results are several very aural, atmospheric pieces, juxtaposed with other which combine rapier wit and catchy, poppish melodies. Though there are several good tracks, of note on the disc are "Your Blue Room," "Miss Sarajevo," and "Elvis Ate America." "Miss Saravejo" is written for Bill Carter's award winning documentary by the same name. The film chronicles the efforts of several artists who, in the midst of the Yugoslavian war, staged an elaborate beauty contest. The song itself features Luciano Pavarotti's operatic vocals, and is a subtle parody of the famous "Miss America" theme. "Your Blue Room," written for Wim Wender's Beyond The Clouds, tells the tale of a man who is fascinated, even obsessed with a woman. The man finds that he cannot bring himself to act on his obsession, fearing that it would jeopardize the emotions which cause his obsession. "Elvis Ate America" combines "stream of consciousness" lyrics with a primitive rhythm & blues backdrop, creating a humorous look at the man that Elvis Aaron Presley became toward the end of his life. The lyrics touch on how greatly the King of Rock 'n' Roll impacted the American landscape, not so much as singer, but simply as an icon in the pantheon of modern life. It is a heavily iconoclastic piece, but definitely one of the jewels on this disc. If you are looking for an arty, aural, atmospheric addition for your CD collection, this is a must buy. For anyone else, my advise would be to listen to the disc before you purchase it. |
