Much Afraid
Essential Records

At last, the much anticipated follow-up release from Jars Of Clay, Much Afraid.

Much Afraid is a thoroughly enjoyable disc, containing the electric orchestral sound for which Jars is known, a sound only slightly different from their first, self-titled release. It contains the hits Overjoyed, and Crazy Times, as well as several other gems.

"Five Candles (You Were There)" is one such song. It seems to have been written in the memory of one of JOC's parents. It is a song of love and regret, themes that seems to run throughout this album. The lyrics read "empty boxes on the floor / things I've never asked you for / I pray that when the wick has burned / you would say that it's all about love".

The balladic "Tea And Sympathy" is a stand-out tune which uses Salvador Dali/surrealistic imagery to describe a romantic break-up; the dream-like pace of the song adds to the effect.

If you liked the first JOC album, you'll more than likely enjoy this one also.
