Smalltown Poets
Listen Closely
Forefront Records

While there is a good mix of pop and folk stylings on the second release from Smalltown Poets, it is the up-front, in-your-face lyrics which really make this a great album. The songs, some of which seem almost painfully personal, reflect the desire that the Poets have to grow in their relationship with Christ, and challenge the listener to follow on the journey.

The album starts off with "Call Me Christian", a song which challenges those who call themselves believers to understand what the name Christian is all about.

The radio hit, "There Is Only You" is another song which challenges the listener. This time, though, the Poets' challenge is, who is the god of your life? Are we living out the first commandment, you shall have no other gods before me? Turning inward with a guilty conscience, I too have to repent and sing "I've cleared this temple out / come take your place again / there is only You."

"Long Long Way" is a song for the prodigal son in each of us. It reminds us that no matter how far away we feel from Christ, that if we call, He will come running.
