Sandman is a comic written by Neil Gaiman. It ran for 75 issues from 1987 to 1995. That amounts to over 2000 pages, numerous plots and sub-plots, and one incredible journey.
The main story revolves around seven siblings known as the Endless, mainly Morpheus (aka Dream) and the Dreaming, his realm.
The artwork is supurb, but I like the writing most of all. Neil makes hundreds of literary references throughout the story, from Shakespeare to Mary Poppins to...whatever. It doesn't hurt to keep a dictionary handy.
This was my first exposure to "serious" comics, outside of the usual superhero and cartoony stuff. I urge you to check Sandman out, and if you like its dark-modern-drama-comedy-fantasy-style, any of Neil's other works.
Preludes and Nocturnes: After 70 years of imprisonment, the Dream King escapes and reclaims his place. A good beginning to build on. Includes Death's first appearance. (4.75/5)
The Doll's House: Morpheus must deal with a vortex in the Dreaming. Sandman's first major plotline, introducing the Corinthian. (5/5)
Dream Country: four short stories, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Well-written, but feels scant. (3/5)
Season of Mists: After banishing his lost love to Hell, Dream goes there to get her back. Good story, moody artwork. (4/5)
A Game of You: Barbie searches for the Cuckoo. This story goes outside the normal plot, but still works. (4/5)
Fables and Reflections: short stories. Includes "Orpheus," "Ramadan," "3 Septembers and a January"...read 'em all. (5/5)
Brief Lives: Dream and Delirium search for their lost brother. Probably the most accessable of the stories. (5/5)
World's End: Travelers swap stories at an inn during a "reality storm." Great art. (3.75/5)
The Kindly Ones: Dream's fate is carried out by the Furies. Really long, since it includes almost every character introduced so far. Read some of the others first. (4.5/5)
The Wake: A wake is held. A satisfying ending, with some of the best art. (4/5)
