(Tracks #11 & 12 performed with the Kaleidoscope)
"In the liner notes of "Okeh - A Northern Soul Obsession" (Kent CD132), Ady
Croasdell describes this album as "the nearest thing to a Northern Soul LP
that was ever issued at the time", and he's right. Plenty of up tempo numbers
from the titles track to the famous "A Quitter Never Wins", although the
single version of "A Quitter Never Wins" is a stronger take. Along the way,
though, they try different things, such as the ballad "Ask Me" with it's high
pitched male chorus in the background, and the stunning, laid back delivery of
Cannonball Adderley's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". Very cool. The obvious comparison
is Sam & Dave in their vocal presentation, sharing the duties and backing each
other up. But they are much slicker, hipper, and they know it. Confidence, and
sometimes even conceit, are in abundance. The two bonus tracks were cut in
1968 with psychedelic group Kaleidoscope, and they make a nice addition to the
LP. The A side, "Nobody" is a mid- tempo, sitar and tambourine drenched
beauty. The B side is similar to the material on the LP, with female vocals
and strings backing them. A very nice package indeed."
