Sober
has nothing to do with straight edge
1992 Sober released there first single (but then under the name Strobe) named
"Negative". Mikael Sörling who thought that the single were 92's best, wrote in CLOSE UP #6:
"Strobe plays surprisingly tight and well-played indie-punk, that sometimes explode in an
inferno of galopping horsepunk and then go back to the beutiful, soft and poppy. Punk with hit
feeling."
It turn out so that a band in England had already taken the name Strobe so the lads in
the band changed the name to Sober and it has nothing to do with straight edge according to
Jimmie Ohlsson himself.
Under the name Sober they recorded in february -93 a demotape
called "Babysitter" that doesn't sounds like a Negative 2.
Peter Ahlquist from Burning Heart Records released the single"Blowjob" with four songs. Two
songs from the demo, one from the single and the unreleased "Wondering why" which
became the audiens favorite under the TransGlobalNilsHolgerssonTour -94 when they were
touring with Dia Psalma.
At the same time as the single "Blowjob" was released Per Granberg from Birdnest Records
decided to take the band into the birdnest.
The full lenght debute took place on Birdnest Records with the album "First Step". The cover
shows a orange and around six feets. The songs are mostly the songs from the demo
"Babysitter". The album containes some real hardpunk songs like "The third phase", "Itch",
"Sick and Tired" and "Shudder" and some real soft but supersongs like "Friends", "Nothing"
and "?" and the in middle the Bad Religion-like songs "The way I feel a sunday morning" and
"Tired".
The single "Snowbored" was released in 1995 and it containes five songs, the first song
"Snowbored" is a terrific punksong with some good guitarslings and with a lyric about the
tyranni of the winter. The song "Used" is a real Nirvana-unplugged song, very good."I'm gone"
is another song on the single with a little depressive lyric (which isn't so unusal in Jimmies
lyrics) and is one hell of a song.
The second full length album was released in 1996 and contains 13 songs,
two of them from the single "Snowbored", "Snowbored" and "I'm gone".
The review of the album can you read a bit down on this page.
Sober Yeah Yeah Yeah (Birdnest)
+++ out of +++++
Swedish noisy, fast and röjig rock that talks directly to the potential garageinhabitant
inside. The fact that Jimmie have got a whiny voice is not a problem, on the other hand he
have got a tendens to scream a litle bit too much. The favoritesongs is the singlereleased
songs "Snowbored" and "Superman" and "I'll be the one" with a nice violin.
