Gold price tag for Hutchence 'palace'

It's one of the most expensive homes for sale on the Gold Coast, but it's owner has rarely seen it. This is the property of Michael Hutchence bought but only ever stayed in twice - and never with his family.

On the Nerang River, it's an idyllic family home, and agents say it's $1 million-plus price tag will be the highest paid in several years.

"He was here twice, but he never brought Paula (Yates) and the kids," the former gardener at the sprawling mansion says. "He never got the chance."

Hutchence's suicide in a Sydney hotel room last November means the single level, 20-year old home on the glitzy Isle of Capri is up for sale. "It's like a palace inside," says the man who has tended it's gardens for 17 years. "I don't know what will happen to it now,"

The four bedrooms, swimming pool and gardens filled with stone statues are attracting local and international investors - and those seeking a connection with the late singer's name.

Hutchence bought the house in La Spezia Court for $900,000 two years ago, visiting occasionally while his friend and solicitor Steve Diamond lived there.

Built for the Kratzmann family of Gold Coast developers, it has lost some of it's glory and needs an urgent refit.

It's river frontage, with a large balcony and floor to ceiling windows, covers three blocks. "It's a lovely position in a colourful street," says one resident. "Peter Foster used to live here too."

Hutchence never met the notorious conman, who was taken into custody in Melbourne last week. The rock star kept to himself when he stayed at the house, which is a short drive from his mother, Patricia Glassop's apartment. "He's a very quiet man," says his gardener, who asked to remain anonymous.

"I couldn't believe what happened to him. He must have had terrible problems." Stone eagles guard the wrought-iron gates to the brick house, which will go to auction in three weeks.
