Nice to meet you both...it's a nice single...very M People.
SHOVELL: We do have a style. We're very into real songs. Good lyrics, strong performances, good tunes.
HEATHER: It has to come from within. I have to believe what I'm singing about.
You really divide the critics though. A lot of them really have it in for you.
HEATHER: But you have to do it for yourself. You can't worry about the people who don't like you. You have to listen to the people who do.
SHOVELL: Yeah. It's mad though. You go to a country like Australia and the crowds go mad at the live shows. They don't have to come and see you. You don't know them. That is such a buzz.
So how do you get that M People sound?
HEATHER: If only we had a formula for writing a hit song...because they go in the charts people think we must have a formula. But it's just down to hard work.
But you must expect your singles to go top 10 almost automatically these days?
HEATHER: I'm never complacent about my singles.
SHOVELL: We were all in bands before M People and we were lucky then to even sell 30 or 40 copies - let alone get into the top 30 or 40.
It must have been good getting your first top 10 though?
SHOVELL: Heather here is very modest. I'm not. I joined M People late and then the first single I was involved with went into the top 10!
