South American Tour Diary
Thursday 17th August
We left Heathrow on the 22.05, reached San Paulo (18th August) 08.15. Unfortunately Mikes case was still in London, so spent the afternoon shopping with Mike and had a press conference and a photo shoot with Kate Garner in the evening.Italian meal with B.M.G. Brazil, knackered and went to bed. As written previously, arrived to not a great start with Mikes case, but in the early evening around 7ish a press conference and interview was set up at our hotel. Before, during and after this press conference, Kate Garner had photo sessions with the band. We were taken to a really nice Italian restaurant later that evening by Roberto - B.M.G.- BRAZIL - and then a few of us hit a bar called VANGUARD. Sampled the delights of a few Brazilian drinks and then to bed knackered.
Saturday 19th August
Started early this morning, a quick breakfast and then more photos with Kate Garner. Some shots were taken on a big suite in the hotel room 2121, others out on the street, and more in a bar. This meant lots of clothing changes, and a long day, but it's got to be done. Straight after the photo sessions, we went o place called the BAR for an interview with M.T.V. Brazil, this went pretty well even though by now all of us were pretty tired. Next door to the BAR was a clothes shop, so in M People tradition we shopped for a while. Rushed back to the hotel for a very very important fax of the new football seasons first day results. News of the day - Man City 1 - Tottenham 1 Blackburn 1 - Q.P.R.0. And so to bed......
Sunday 20th August

Joke of the day, watching the Tyson comeback early morning in Mikes room.
Would you believe more photos with Kate Garner, this time most were in the street, much to the amusement of the onlookers, but some were done in the hotel snooker room. Although this might sound like a few outdoor, indoor shots, believe me photo sessions can and do go on for hours, but most of the time the end results are always good, especially with Kate. Anyway after the photos we went to dinner at a place called SPOT, ate, drank made merry and again flopped to bed.
Monday 21st August
Can't believe it - NO PHOTOS; however, we're off to do three different Sao Paulo radio stations who want interviews. One of the questions asked was "whilst we are on stage performing, where do we leave our wallets?" Mike said, "by his feet on stage"; we don't even think about it - but at least it was a new question.
We then travelled to a T.V.station to appear on a music show, however, after getting changed and waiting around, the T.V. show was aborted at the last minute, no real reason was given, but off is off. That night saw us at CLUB LATINO where there was a party for us, and we received an award from D.J. SOUND MAGAZINE for BEST ALBUM IN 1994 for ELEGANT SLUMMING, voted for by the magazines readers.
Tuesday 22nd August
First gig night at a venue called OLYMPIA in Sao Paulo. M.T.V. Brazil filmed some stuff during the sound check and we had a short interview with them. Early afternoon we were at a music store for a signing, i.e. signing posters, C.D.covers, T-Shirts, caps etc, and having more photos taken. We went straight from the music store to the soundcheck.
After the soundcheck it's back to the hotel, quick bite to eat, shower, change, then back to Olympia for the gig - scheduled for 10.30pm. Venue holds 4,500 we had 3000 in, - not bad for first ever gig in Brazil. All the band were pleased, the gig went very well and the crowd really enjoyed it. Shovell went to a Pizzeria - the best in Sao Paulo. The rest - to bed.
Wednesday 23rd August
First chance to sleep in. Second show day - again at Olympia. Left hotel at 4pm for soundcheck, and same scenario as yesterday, - shower, shave (for some) and change.Then back to the Olympia. Again we had around 3000 in, and with one gig already under our belts, tonight seemed more relaxed and the crowd even more up for it. We then had some drinks at the venue, then at Vancho's Bar, - then to bed. Ready for the 11.00am leave to Rio De Janeiro tomorrow.
Thursday 24th August
Goodbye Sao Paulo. Travel to Rio De Janeiro
Another early start. Breakfast for some. Shovell's absent again, - bags collected at 10.30am. Leave hotel at 11.00am, flights depart at 12.00pm. The flight is only 45 minutes long, but an interview is to be done during the flight for D.J, SOUND Magazine. Finally arrive in Rio at 1.00pm and at the hotel at 2.00pm. Rio looks beautiful from the hotel but with a press conference scheduled at 7.30pm, there`s only a chance to unpack and have a meeting and not a lot of time left to look around. Then a meal and then bed.
Friday 25th August
Show day in Rio.
With the soundcheck at 4-5pm and the schedule busy until we leave, a few of the band visit Copacabana and Ipanema beaches to quickly get in some sun. Beautiful sights everywhere and Shovell gets an owl neck. After a couple of hours it's off to soundcheck etc. The venue METROPOLITAN is only a year old and purpose built. It's great. The stage can be seen from every angle, and backstage there's two Jacuzzi's - girls and boys, 3-4 large size rooms and people ready to help at any time. The venue holds 10,000, we had around 6,500. Matt Amos and his crew filmed LOVE RENDEZVOUS for the new video and single at the gig. This seemed to go really well and Matt was pleased. After the gig we had a few drinks at the hotel, and then......bed.,
Saturday 26th August
Football results not impressive for Shovell,Paul or Mike. Another early day. Today is for the video shoot of LOVE RENDEZVOUS. Matt Amos and his crew had been in Rio all week finding locations and sorting out technical things. We (i.e.Mike, Heather,Paul and Shovell) leave the hotel at 8.30am. The first shoot starts at 9.15am, and already it's really hot. There are some beautiful locations; Rio Botanical Gardens, Jesus over Rio at night, The Rio Trams - all bright yellow and packed, moreover just Rio's people and natural beauty - this should be one of our best video's. We finally arrive back at the hotel at 8.15. It's a quick change, then we go to see a Brazilian band, have a few drinks, and then of course.......bed. Honest!!!
Sunday 27th August
GOING HOME
Everyone's up early for breakfast except of course Shovell. Bags are collected at 11.45am. Depart hotel at 12.00pm. Depart Rio at 2.00pm. Arrive Sao Paulo at 3.00pm. Check in British Airways at 3.30pm. Depart for London at 5.30pm. Films, food and sleep on the plane.
Monday 28th August
Arrive Heathrow at 08.40am
There's talk of some of us going to the Carnival, but by the afternoon it's a case of ZZZZzzzzzzz's.
