Oude Rai, Amsterdam, August 17, 1972

Source: soundboard (?)
Running Time: 22 min.
Rating (sound): 8.5 (performance) 10
Setlist: (all songs by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted)
1. My Generation
2. See Me, Feel Me
3. Summertime Blues E. Cochran/J. Capehart)
4. won't Get Fooled Again

Notes: A short segment of what must surely have been an awesome early '70's show. The source appears to be a soundboard recording, but there is a lot of tape hiss due to the high number of generations. Vocals and guitars are clear and out-front. Phenomenal high energy is displayed--Keith is in top form. Just wish I could find more of this show, or this tour. I generally use this material as filler. There is song separation, as these four numbers are presented out of order.

Philadelphia Spectrum, December 4, 1973

Source: Soundboard for FM broadcast
Running Time: 75 min.
Rating: (sound) 8.5 (performance) 8
Setlist: (all songs by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted)
1.I Can't Explain
2.Summertime Blues
3.My Generation
4.I Am The Sea/The Real Me
5.I'm One
6.Sea And Sand
7.Drowned
8.Bell Boy
9.Doctor Jimmy
10.Won't Get Fooled Again
11. Pinball Wizard
12. See Me, Feel Me

Notes: A classic Quadrophenia show recorded for broadcast by King Biscuit Flower Hour. Despite technical imperfections (Pete comes in early on "The Real Me" for instance), still the finest boot available of a Quad performance by the original Who. This show is supposed to be officially released in the second half of '98, but no date has been set, and there is talk of combining material from this show and 12/6/73 to cover up mistakes and dodgy spots for the general public.

Running Time: 120 min.
Rating: (sound) 7 (performance) 9

1. I Can't Explain
2. Summertime Blues (E. Cochran/J. Capehart)
3. I Am The Sea/The Real Me
4. The Punk And The Godfather

13. Pinball Wizard
14. See Me, Feel Me
15. Substitute
16. Naked Eye
17. Let's See Action
18. Magic Bus

Notes: I have mixed feelings about this show. As is often the case, an absolutely superb performance is marred by the imperfections of the recording. In this case, a truly murky audience recording which leaves a lot to be desired. Certainly not a complete waste, as the power of the music still comes through, and vocals (including stage announcements) are pretty clear. The light Christmas-time spirit seems to have invaded the concert hall, and the band seem to genuinely enjoy this Quad show. Between song banter is at its hilarious best, and the introductions to various Quad songs are rather interesting. A hard boot to get excited about at first, but it eventually absorbs your attention and wins you over.

Charlton Athletic Football Club Stadium, May 18, 1974

Running Time: 110
Rating: (sound) 9 (performance) 8
Setlist: (all songs by Pete Townshend unless otherwise noted)
1. Young Man Blue (M. Allison)
2. Behind Blue Eyes
3. Pinball Wizard
4. See Me, Feel Me
5. Magic Bus
6. My Generation
7. Substitute
8. I'm A Boy
10. Boris The Spider (J. Entwistle)
11. Drowned
12. Bell Boy
13. Doctor Jimmy
14. Won't Get Fooled Again
15. Summertime Blues (E. Cochran/J. Capehart)
16. Baba O'Riley
17. Naked Eye
18. Let's See Action
19. My Generation Blues

Notes: A show professionally filmed and recorded for radio broadcast. The performance suffers from being the first one after a three-month lay-off and for the fact that Pete was excessively drunk during it. Still, an interesting concert with more variety than a Who set had seen in some time, but they seem to be searching for a groove that they just can't get into. Another drawback for this boot is that the songs are out of sequence, cutting out some between song dialogue and hurting the flow.

17. My Generation
18. Waspman (K. Moon)
19. Naked Eye
20. My Generation Blues (with drum solo ending)
21. 5.15

Notes: A really fun, really different show, with an unusual setlist. The recording isn't outstanding, but an enjoyable concert still can be heard. Some technical short-comings interfere, such as microphone feedback and too much volume on the backing tapes for ome of the songs, but still a good show. Two noteworthy rarities are the impromptu drum solo after "My Generation Blues" and the only known performance of Keith's "Waspman." One of a series of shows at MSG.
