Superstar Carwash

Lyrics

Review of how hot Johnny, Robby and George look while washing cars.

Buffalo, NY's Goo Goo Dolls don't have many pretentions about where their metaphorical roots lie (Minneapolis) or what their aim is (to make irresistible, fuzzy pop hits), and luckily for us they do what they do pretty darn well. Superstar Car Wash, the Goos' fourth album, provides a solid dose of 14 supercharged bursts, recorded with a palatable balance of polish and drive. The melodies glowing throughout are tempered by the band's raspy vocals and impetuous energy, giving them a lively yet down-to-earth sense of animation. While the Goo Goo Dolls hove never eschewed the more colorful, melodic side of rock, their sound has veered away from the harder-edged rock found on its first two LPs, becoming decidedly closer to power pop over time. On 1990's Hold Me Up they covered the Plimsouls' power-pop anthem "A Million Miles Away," and here the band tackles "We Are The Normal," co-written by Paul Westerberg, which smiles on its own tasteful harmonies and violin/mandolin/ accordion accompaniment. Superstar Car Wash boasts several high points, including "Fallin' Down," "Cuz You're Gone," "We Are The Normal," "Already There" and "On The Lie."
