My academic career ended in 1968 over the hair thing. People today take long hair for granted, but in 1968 there was almost a civil war in the country and having long hair was considered disrespectful to authority and an act of rebellion. If you were a kid, it was serious f----n' business. So you learn all the tricks. You don't wash it for three weeks, plaster it down with Brylcreem, and stick it under your collar.
