Steven and Joe began working with outside songwriters like Desmond Child, Jim Vallance and, later, Mark Hudson. This was a huge shift for the band. What was that like?
I felt really weird about it because, at that point, we were trying things that weren't our idea. And we were listening to other people. We started being clean and sober and trying all that stuff out and actually playing music without having a beer. It's a whole different mind-set. So, within that mind-set, it seems
kind of almost natural to try different things. I mean, if we didn't, we never would have had a record like, "Permanent Vacation." - Billboard, 8/15/98.
