Darien Lake, NY, July 9, 1997. I was on an AF1 travel package and my first time meeting the band. Things got messed up and the meet and greet lasted only about 5 minutes. I had made the band members t-shirts, and did not have a chance talk to any of the band members. I decided I would at least try to give Joe his. So after the group pictures had been taken, I went up to Joe and handed him the shirt, and said "I made this shirt for you, but didn't have a chance to give it to you earlier." He said, "Thanks, but where did you get the one you have on?" [I was wearing a t-shirt I had made, the picture was from the Rolling Stone, November 1992 issue (Joe, no shirt, really long hair, arms crossed), and it said "Chairman of the Board" on it.] He then started to walk back to the venue. Of course, I had to answer his question, so I started walking with him, and I told him "I had it made the week you guys fired Tim Collins because I needed to find some humor in the situation." He smiled, I stopped walking, and I saw him open up the t-shirt I had given him (from being folded) and he looked at the front and the back. It took awhile for the whole event to sink in. As I walked back to the tent, Amy and Michelle were there going "How cool was that?" They couldn't believe what they had seen. What's more of a miracle is that someone actually got a picture of it. Thanks very much to Lilly Shabita-Salley for sending me the picture and to her husband, Jeff, for taking it in the first place.
