the fluff that gets stuck between
your toes when you wear socks

September 2, 2002

As I was redesigning and editing this website, I realized I’ve been promising a thought on the highly important topic of sock fluff for a couple of years.  Since I pride myself on keeping my promises, here it is.

Ever notice how, when you wear cotton socks, you get pieces of fluff stuck between your toes?

It’s just one of those things that people seem to accept without questioning.  I wonder why that is. After all, socks are supposed to keep feet warm and dry, not disintigrate into little pieces.  When I shell out good money for a pair of socks, I don’t want to end up with holes in the toes six months down the line!

Besides, those little pieces then make a mess when you change your socks.  There’s no polite way to remove your socks and brush them off in public, so you’re stuck with them in private. Then, if you take off your socks before showering, they end up clogging up the shower drain. What a nuisance!

Ever wonder how the socks feel?  I mean, pieces of them keep disintigrating. Socks probably hate feet. They love to sit in the sock drawer, all rolled up into little balls, just chilling and hanging out with their sock buddies. Until - rude awakening - they get yanked out of bed, unrolled, and placed on someone’s smelly feet all day. No wonder they rebel by annoying those same feet that insist on wearing them! And by disappearing in the dryer, but that’s a whole other story . . .

Okay, okay, I’m unemployed and bored, and my brain is on off.  I know you’re sitting there, extremely disappointed at the lack of quality reading material in this thought.  Sorry.  I promise that the next thought will be more enlightening and thought-provoking.
