1. Why did you use other names earlier?
For a time I liked having different names, but got tired. Now I use my
own name if it's solo recordings.
2. How did you find noise? What was the first noise record you heard?
I got into noise through extreme metal and grindcore/noisecore. Growing
up I always enjoyed the energy of metal, and always searched for
something more extreme, more energy -and ended up with noise. To me,
noise is a focus on the energy of rock; cutting away the melody,
harmonies and structure.
3. What's the latest on your label jazzassin? Are you doing anyting with
tidal wawe recycling anymore?
I have 3 CDes coming out this month (March '98); Merzbow (in
collaboration with OHM Records), Origami Replika and a CD of me, Bad
Kharma and Grunt. I'm still doing TWR, but without catalogue numbers or
catalogues. I just make tapes and send to friends whenever I have time
to it (not often), and of course call it TWR.
4. You've done loads of tapes. Are they important releases for you? Do
you prefer cd's to tapes?I like all formats. Vinyl, CDs, tapes, video, etc.
5. Do you have any goals with your noise works?
Just to have fun and see what happens. No higher meaning or goals. I
have a hard time being lazy.
6. Could you give us a short presentation about all these origamiactivities?
Origami is sort of a multi-media collective specialising in
"easy-media"; books, music (with a huge varirty of styles), mailart,
politics, magic, cassettes, theater, communication of various forms.
It's devided into different fractions. I'm just involved with Origami
Replika which is the noise/punk/scum part. I mostly help out live and do
work on some albums (my biggest involvments has been the collaboration
CDs with Kapotte Muziek and Merzbow).
7. Tell us about del, what's this sonic youth thing?
Del is my band (3 people); taking a sort-of improvised guitar/drone
starting point. It's pretty out-there and weird. Our first single was a
Sonic Youth tune. We plan to do more Sonic covering in the future. Our
first LP is out in April.
8. What equipment do you use? What was the last equipment you bought for
Lasse Marhaug recordings?
I hate to buy equipment, the only real investment I've made is my
DAT-machines. The last thing I bought must have been a a bag of
effect-pedals. Real cheap, but only half of them worked.
9. What do you think is the coolest thing that's happened in the noise
circuit lately?
Coolest? Dunno. Nothing has stood out (or maybe I missed it?). I guess
the release of Merzbox will a cool thing.
10. How was london? How did your gigs go?
London was fun. The show at London Astoria (with Origami Replika,
opening for Neubauten) was good. The show at 121 Centre, Brixton (as
Lasse Marhaug/Wertham) was not my best, but decent.
11. With all the releasing/recording etc. can you find time to collect
and listen to records? What were the last few you've bought?
I have time to listen to everything I collect, I work just 6 hours a day
and have time to listen to everything. The stereo is running constantly
-I don't have to be "in the mood" to listen to noise, I can put on
Incapacitants first thing in the morning. The last CD I bought was the
new Madonna album (pretty fucking brilliant).
12. What else do you do besides music?
You mean creativly? I do some graphic design work.
13. What do you think of porn imagery in noise? At least you did a 7"
concerning the issue w. gerogerigegege...
I like porn, I like the idea of porn; to show people having sex. It's a
good thing. A lot of porn might be crap but that's a matter of taste.
Most use of porn in noise is pointless, but still enjoyable. I'd rather
see naked women than dead bodies. The 7" with Gerogerigegege and Origami
Erotika was sort-of a statement on the subject (a statement of Origami
Erotika, not me).
14. Can you mention a couple of your near future releases?
Single on Korm Plastiks in June, single on Disaster Area soon, new full
solo CD on Jazzassin this spring, and about 10 to 15 more records and
something like 20 cassette involvements.
15. Have you gotten influences for your material from outside the noisescene?
I'm a film buff so that provide a major influence (especially with Del).
Mostly I'm inspired of the creative process -of just doing things.
16. What is the coolest band in trondheim?
Ka.
17. What record did you listen to last?
Some trip-hop/drum'n'bass stuff I don't remember the name of. Before
that Harry Pussy LP and some 60ies pop.
18. Something else?
Many thanks for the interview.
