Review: There's little point in reviewing a "best of", anyway I'll do it for the sake of completeness. "Hymns To Victory" just celebrates twenty years of career, an adventure started twenty years ago, disbanded by the end of the eighties and slowly growing back to new heights through the nineties. As a "best of", this one is not very representative: the tracklist emphasizes mostly on the most recent material, leaving aside gems like "Lion In Winter", "Angel Of Light", "The Evil In Her Eyes" or "We Are Immortal", for example. The "Life Among The Ruins" album has been totally ignored, which is sad because it shows another (excellent) side of Virgin Steele... All in all, an unnecessary work in itself, not very representative nor meaningful. Some tracks (like "Invictus" or the ones from the "Atreus" albums) improve slightly because of a new mastering, and surely the acoustic version of "The Spirit Of Steele" is really charming. As for unreleased material, there's an average rock'n'roller, "Saturday Night", and another beautiful, Zeppelin-esque acoustic track, "The Mists Of Avalon". In my opinion, this album is just for those who want everything from their favorite band; people who wish to discover Virgin Steele will get a better idea from a full album.

Line up: David DeFeis (vocals, keyboard), Edward Pursino (guitar), Josh Block (bass guitar), Frank Gilchriest (drums).
