The title Braindead is the original name of this film. I saw it at a film
festival and this was indeed the title. However, Due to a conflict with
another North American film of the same title, it was renamed Dead Alive
for this audience.
Cast:
Lionel: Timothy Dalme
Paquita: Dianna
Mom: Elizabeth Woody
Uncle Leo: Ian Watkin
Minister:
It's a tale of zombies, but not your average kind. Oh no, there's no such
thing as an average zombie in a Peter Jackson film. These zombies are the
result of a monkey bite. In the beginning of the film we see a New Zealand
zoo official and a native assistant roaming the hills of Sumatra after
having caught a Simian Raticus for the Newtown Zoo. The native tells the zoo
official of his bad gut feeling in capturing this creature. However, like
most zoo hunters, this guy is just out for a buck and doesn't care about
native superstitions regarding the monkey. They suceed in escaping some
other natives who instruct them to put the monkey back. The zoo official dies
shortly thereafter. We then go off to Newtown and get introduced to the main
characters.
There are four main characters here: Lionel - a nice man who still lives
at home. Mother - Lionel's aging nit picking mother. Paquita - a new love
interest in Lionel's life. Uncle Leo- a raunchy asshole uncle of Lionel Les
who's after everything Lionel has.
The zombies enter into the movie via Lionel's mother, who while spying on
him and Paquita during a nice trip to the zoo, gets bitten by the Sumatra Rat
Monkey. She brutally kills the monkey, but already has the dooming bite. Lionel
attempts to save his mother and all the others she turns into zombies but the
numbers are increasing rapidly. He keeps his mother and her recent victims
sedated with animal tranquilzers in the basement. The number goes up another
notch courtesy of a nurse giving birth to a baby zombie after getting knocked
up by a zombie minister (who delivered Lionel's mother's eulogy).
The recently inherited estate gets turned into a party house and most of the
guests converted to zombies when Uncle Les throws a wild bash. Lionel must step
in and take control of the situation to save himself and Paquita and to keep
the zombies from escaping and infecting the outside world.
Quite a twisted little horror film, Dead Alive is sadistically funny as you'll
see from some of the quotes listed here. If you should sojourn off to rent it
from your local video store, make sure it's the UNCUT version that you get.
The cut version that many of the major video store chains carry is often cut
so bad that you miss about 20 of the best mins of the film. Almost the entire
climax scene is gone in this version and believe me, that's definetely the
part you REALLY want to see!
The following is a list of quotes from Dead Alive
"This thing is evil mon, I got a BAAAAAD feeling" -Native
"Listen, you no pick up the cage, you no get the big dollars" -N.Z zoo official
"Singaya! singaya!.. You've got the BITE!" -Native
"Reckon they're only found on one island ya know. Story goes these great big
rats came scurrying off the slave ships and raped all the little tree monkeys.
Ya know, the natives use them in black magic rituals. Don't ask me how,
probably suck the blood of virgins eh?" -Zoo keeper
"Look at this! It bit me, i've been savaged" -Mother
"What we needs another war!" -Mr. Matheson
"What, no pudding?! I haven't had a good custard in years. SHE doesn't like
the stuff. Rich and creamy, just the way I like it!" -Mr. Matheson
"Lionel, Lionel you must listen to me. Dark forces are messing against you!
-Paquita
"Your mother ate my dog!!!" -Paquita
"Your mother is dead Lionel." -Nurse
"What do you want? You're not from ze immigration. I told you people I lost my
bloody papers ok. My family left Latvia during the occupation. Ve vere hunted
like dogs!" Veterinarian
"I just want to buy some sedatives." -Lionel
"Death surrounds you. There will be torment and suffering. You are marked.
"It contains the power of the white light, it will protect you, keep it with
you always." -Paquita's grandmother
"I haven't seen him, and if he's not here within 10 minutes his mother will
be delivered into the hands of the Lord in his absence." -Father McGroder
"The theme of today's service is the sanctity of motherhood. Vera Cosgrove
will be surely missed by her friends and grieving family. But she was
indeed a fine woman, and everything a boy could wish for in a mother. Lionel
though deprived of his father at an early age, was blessed with an abundance
of MOTHERLOVE." -Father McGroder
"I've seen some displays of grief in my day but nothing quite like that!" -Father McGroder
"That's my mother you're pissing on." -Lionel
"Evil is amongst us, stay back boy this calls for devine intervention. *I*
kick ass for the Lord!" -Father McGroder
"That's quite a collection of stiffs you have down there." -Uncle Les
"Goddamn little rugrat! Where are ya ya little crawler?!" -Uncle Les
