exercises - hammer-on and pull-offStarting techniques: Ok, so you've finished warming up with the previous lesson, now its time for some basic hammer on and pull off exercises. I touched lightly on these 2 tricks in How to Read Tab, but heres some simple explanations. Basically, hammer on means you 'hammer' a string down with your finger without picking it, the sound is produced from slamming it down or from previous pickings. Pull off means you pull the string as you take your finger off. Yeah, I know I can't explain it very well...anyway here are some simply riffs to work on.Exercise 2a: Hammer-on and Pull-off 1 3 1 2 1 2* 4 1 2 3 e|----------------------|------------------------| B|----------------4p3---|------6-6---9p6---------| G|--------3h5p3---------|------7-7-------7h8-----| D|----------------------|------------------------| A|----------------------|------------------------| E|----------------------|------------------------| 2* 1* 4 1* e|----------------------|-----7------------------| B|-----6-6---8-8p6---6--|-----7h10p7h10p7h10p7---| G|-----5-5---------7----|------------------------| D|----------------------|------------------------| note: to make this harder A|----------------------|------------------------| play on lower frets E|----------------------|------------------------| 4 2 1 2 1 2 1 4 2 1 3 e|------10p8p7-------------------------| B|--------------h8p7h8p7h10p8p7--------| G|------------------------------h9-----| D|-------------------------------------| A|-------------------------------------| E|-------------------------------------|The last exercise introduces the technique of hammering on a note without playing another note on the same string before it. It takes a bit of practice to master, but it'll make you're style more professional and clean. The next exercise starts to get a bit more difficult, but you should be able to get them flowing well after a bit of practice. Exercise 2b: Let's get technical! 4 2 4 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 e|------------------|---5-------------------------------| B|------------------|---5-------------------------------| G|----7p5-----h5----|------7p5-----h5-------------------| D|--------h7--------|----------h7-----h7p5h7---7--------| A|------------------|--------------------------7--------| E|------------------|--------------------------5--------| 1 3 2 4 2 3 4 1 1 2 1 4 1 2 1 3 1 e|----------------10-7----------------------------------| B|------8h10p8-------7--let ring---7h8p7h10p7h8p7-------| G|--7h9--------7----------------------------------h9p7--| D|------------------------------------------------------| A|------------------------------------------------------| E|------------------------------------------------------| 4 2 1 2 4 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 1 3 2 4 2 4 1 e|--10p8p7------------------------|---------------------| B|---------8h10p8p7---7-------7---|--------8h10p8-------| G|------------------9---9p7---7---|---7h10--------10p7--| D|--------------------------9-0---|---------------------| A|--------------------------------|---------------------| E|--------------------------------|---------------------| HINT: Use rotating picking, ie pick the strings up, down, up down and so on for a better sound. >> Next Lesson - major scales |
