A Work in Progress

1999-present

I was struck by a phenomenon that I would like to imagine everyone has done now and again...while listening to a song I'd heard a thousand times before, you suddenly get this profound understanding of the song you somehow managed to avoid all the go-rounds before. I then found myself thinking up some lines that were in the same nature and, coupled with my apparent desire to piss myself off, decided I should try to write a song cycle or concept album or something. Anyway, these are what I've got so far, though not necessarily in any particular order. I'll save the story...the lyrics should explain enough, and besides, it's not done yet! =P

3/4 Mind in 4/4 Time
Peterson

Do you remember the words that you wrote?
Do you look over your old liner notes?
Did you mean those things, that every night you said
Or did you just say what they told you to instead?
It's so hard to talk about
A 3/4 mind in 4/4 time

I know I'm just a boy, and you are just a man
But you were my hero when you had your band
And nothing really ever lasts forever, my man
When you walked away you lost your biggest fan

Do you remember the poster poses, like the one I had on my wall?
Do you remember that one show, in my town's concert hall?
Maybe I'm asking for too much, but why don't you come back?
I never asked for anything, 'cept maybe an autograph
And the years took away, more than they gave you
Did it get so hard to talk about
Your 3/4 mind in 4/4 time?

Play Me a Song
Peterson

Pull some old records off the shelf
Don't wanna hear anything
With better fidelity than myself
Thinking back to the days I flew solo
As the turntable spins
The record sings in mono

So play me a song, one we all know
One that I think, we all know how it goes
Play me a song, on my record player
Play me a song, for this love betrayer

Sometimes I think love's an infection
The only way to cure it
Is a record collection
Maybe I'm not the most pure-hearted man
But I'm still beside you
Doing what I can

She had eyes just like yours
Coulda' been your double
Except for the one thing that got me in trouble
She had the same tastes in music and whiskey
And you know the rest, dear
When she came by and kissed me

So play me a song, about whiskey and women
One about broken hearts, one about mending
Play me a song, on my record player
Play me a song, for this love betrayer
Play me a song, for this love betrayer

Vicious Circles
Peterson
Thought I left it all behind me
Now and then I find myself in the same ol' situation
Thought I finally moved myself on
But it seems I reach the same revelations
The more I try to change
The more I stay the same
The harder I try to break out

Hadn't seen this street before
Now I look around and it's the same indications
Hadn't seen these faces in years
Funny how you suddenly get the inclination
The more I walk away
The more I tend to stay
The harder it is to get out

Come back tomorrow, come back today
Life rolls on in vicious circles
Call me tomorrow, nothing new I'll say
My life keeps spinning in vicious circles

Thought I lost your number
But it seems to return thanks to information
Thought I forgot to dial it
But the memory returns despite my consternation
The more I put it down
The more I hear the sound
The harder it is to get around it

Tracks
Peterson

Kicking around the tracks
The tracks I thought I knew
Everytime I cross them over
I keep finding something new
If I could only get my bleeding fingers
To milk the blood from my guitar
I could travel a million miles
Another almost radio star

I want some words
As profound as the ones you spit out
Maybe I'm trying too hard
To be what you're all about
