Of average height, but with a slimness that makes him look far younger than his years and a face that only smiles when it really wants to, Jeremy Davies made a strong impression in his first feature lead as Ray, the confused youth who ends up having intercourse with his bedridden mother in "Spanking the Monkey" (1994), then, the same year, followed that tortured role by moving 180 degrees portraying a southern greaseball redneck on a motorcycle in "Nell."
Davies--name is his mother's maiden one, he was born "Boring"--was raised in California, but moved to Iowa after his mother died and his father remarried. Unable to make friends easily, he spent his time reading and having ulcers. After high school, he returned to California to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena. While there, he began to win bit and small roles in TV series and movies.
He broke in with a bit on an episode of "Singer & Sons" in 1990, then did two episodes of "The Wonder Years," both in 1992, although in different seasons. He also had a bit role in "Shoot First: A Cop's Vengeance," an NBC TV movie, and even guested in a pilot called "1775," a sitcom set in colonial days, as a Scruffy Kid. About the few substantial roles was a co-starring one as a youth in "Gun Crazy," a Showtime thriller, and a guest appearance on "Melrose Place."
In 1993, Davies was cast in a TV commercial for Subaru in which his "character" compares the car to punk rock. The commercial was noticed by numerous casting directors and industry forces.
Davies found himself being sent feature film scripts. He chose to do "Spanking the Monkey," written by its first-time director, David O. Russell, because it appealed to him. "Nell," in which he was Billy Fisher, a redneck on a motorcycle, demonstrated a range.
