Josh, There is something missing from our scene. I am not going to sugarcoat it. Not that many people here are interested in anything other than fashion and music. It is not necessarily just getting support for shit when people don't even know what it is. I totally understand why no one would come out to protest something they don't understand. I would not do this either. It is not about whether people support "my" punk politics. Punk rockers have always cared about their immediate environment and cared a out making it better (ie: being poor). Some cared about everything around them, not just the stuff that affects them (ie: animals, the environment, etc). Like you said, you have to know what is wrong with the world before you protest it. Unfortunately, the majority of "punx" in this city show no interest in even finding out. ANd I feel it is because they are too busy reaping the benefit of this society built on capitalism to even care. And I'm sure that most, when confronted, answer, "I've got it good here, so there for there is nothing wrong with the state of the world." Somehow, all the shit going on in the rest of the world has nothing to do with us to them, but IT DOES! No, you are not apathetic, you are not apathetic until you know what the prob em is but still do nothing about it. It is not that I want people to come out just cause it's the "punk" thing to do. I want people to get educated about the world around them. People here don't understand that if we all stood up against the shit that s wrong, we would win! If everyone who goes to shows were in front of that circus, it would have been shutdown. We have an attendence of about 100 people in our scene and of this group, only a few chose to educate themselves about issues. I know this b cause we (Free Society Zine/Distro) have provided information at shows, and people rarely take any - IT'S FREE!! All our support for causes boils down to is a fashion statement. Which is a start. Why? Because at Northern, the people there are facing gr at troubles with the administration over something as unimportant as style of clothes. People think of it as a local problem, in that it is the way the school or the school system is. It is the entire system. Not just the school. People just have to l ok deeper into stuff. With anti-racism, there was a start. But for the most part, people failed to see the relationship between racism and sexism, and ultimately, speciesism. As a result, people wear the patches and buttons, but have made no personal c anges. What I am saying is pretty logical, I think. Punk is not just a fashion or a form of music. It is these things, but it is also much more. It involves community, communication, awareness, and FUN! (I probably missed some stuff) Honestly, withou this stuff, what is it? It is of no more importance than any other style - because that is all that it is - a style. Ultimately, change will not occur in this society without personal changes. We have to change stuff about ourselves before change can o cur in society. We have provided educational information and no one has tried to talk to me about any of it. You are the first response there has been in quite a while. I never receive e-mails asking for more info, never receive anyone calling me a lia , or even saying "Right on! Without this info I got, I never would have known." At the show we did to benefit the OAS protest, we did have information available for people to read about what we were protesting. We still have a stack of them left. Anywa , it's people's own business what they believe in, or what they support etc. But I know that for the most part, while we may not be discontented with our lifestyle (nice houses etc), we are discontented with our government and the crooked way it operates I have dislike the govt. for quite a while, but it took some time to realize that the problem was not to do with the people in it - it is a problem with the system of have a government. Without getting into a discussion of the implications of that, I u derstand that without government right now, there would be a serious problem, but I also understand that with personal change and education, we are capable of being better people to each other, and eventually animals as well. I am not mad that people don t protest, I AM mad that people don't seem to give a shit because they are privileged with a safer society. I think... a good way to understand the feeling I'm talking about towards this system is watch the movie Instinct, with Cuba Gooding JR, and Antho y Hopkins. In the movie, Hopkins is threatening "Cuba" with physical harm. He asks, "What have I taken away?" Cuba answers on paper, "My freedom." Hopkins replies, "No." Cuba answers again, but I cannot remember the second response, and Hopkins replie "No" again. His last answer is, "My illusions," and Hopkins releases him. In this society all we have are illusions of freedom. Ultimately, we are controlled through force, by the government. Anyways, thank you for actually communicating your questio s, or disapproval, or anger, rather than just forgetting about it. Because that is how we get shit done. By talking about stuff.

Whoever the person is who wrote the entry about how they still have no respect for me, please e-mail me because I'd like to talk to you. I don't care if you tell me who you actually are. I'd like to know what I did though and why I'm such an asshole. I don't think I'm great. I never have. In fact, I've always thought I had low self-esteem. It sounds to me like someone's got a problem but are not willing to address it with me. If there is something I'm doing that you think I shouldn't be then tell me what it is. If you think I think I'm great because I do a zine, have a website or have a band, you're wrong. I do these things because I care, and because these are outlets for my voice. I never said you had to read this, I didn't force you to pay a buck for a zine 5 bucks to see my band(which by the way is not just ME), or to follow a link, bookmark etc to my site. From the way that being a drunk appears to be the most punk thing someone can do around here, what else is there besides puke and beer and "regurgitated ideologies." These ideologies, while some may be from a record insert, continue to educate those(the m jority of "punx" in Sarnia) who think that punk is about being an addict to something and drinking until they fall over in a pile of their own filth. Coming from a small town where the "punk scene" consists of me and 2 or 3 other people, it was really great to feel that energy that punk music gives off there that night.
