Is this subtext?
This page exists as a little explanation of what subtext in the show Xena: Warrior Princess is.
What is subtext?
Some in the Xenite community think of subtext as the "hinting" that Xena and Gabrielle are involved with each other in a sexual manner.
I like to think of subtext as the belief that they love each other and reflect that love through their actions toward each other.
Are they having sex?
I don't know and that is not the point. What I really like about this show is that these two strong female characters can show affection and love toward each other without a man coming to their rescue.
Should they be a couple?
I think it would be a brave step on the producer's part but the practical side of me realizes that this will never happen. Unfortunately advertisers would run for the hills if this development would occur. This is unfortunate since a loving relationship between two same sex characters would help "homophobic" viewers to see that there is more to this type of relationship than "perverted sex."
