They often repeated the phrase "we're different from other boyband cuz we're ready to sing acappella for anyone, anytime" in their interview with the mass media.
The 5 members of the US group, Take 5, also claim that their vocal prowess stood them in good stead, hence making them stand out above the rest.
Their self-titled debut album, which was released in August under the Form Records label, features beautiful ballads and a fusion of hip-hop, R & B and pop tunes.
Get Down Tonight is a hip hop party song, Please stay a combination of rock and R & B while The Tide Is High, a cover of the Blondie hit, is given a reggae twist.
The first single, I Give, is a groovy song with an infectious hip hop and R & B beat showcasing the lads' vocal versatility.
The album also features one of the guys own composition, the acappella Candle.
Take 5 was in Penang recently on a promotional tour with a meet - the - fans session at Bukit Jambul Complex. Some fan had queued up as early as 11 p.m. for the 4 p.m. show.
Although the boys were not feeling well that day, the put up a good performance with funky acrobatic dance steps, a definite booster for the boys.
Clean-cut and polished entertainers, Take 5 is the good result of good friendship and a little luck.
The oldest member, Ryan Goodell and his bro, Clay, have been friends with the baby of the group, TJ, since their days together in the Minneapolis Boys Choir.
The trio later relocated to Orlando, Florida, to audition for a Disney commercial where they met the other 2 members, Stevie and Tilky.
The 5 complement each other perfectly - TJ's high falsettos to Ryan's cello-like baritones, interspersed with the harmonically diverse tenors of the other 3.
Stevie, 17, said they were surprised by their speedy development after they struck a deal with Trans Continental Records in September last year.
"We anticipated a rough start to our career. We do not know how to handle the stuff that was thrown our way in beginning , but we're taking things in our stride now".
However, they do not consider themselves famous (sounds familiar?) but "just five regular guys having fun doing what we love."
Son of a church minister, Stevie, however sighed at the loss of privacy when the fans come knocking at their doors at odd hours of the day.
The boys have been performing in theatre, commercials and school choirs from a young age.
Clay's resume reads like a seasoned entertainment veteran, having appeared in four motion pictures, numerous commercials and live stage shows, all that by the age of 14!
A shy person, his fav pastime is playing the piano and writing music for Take 5.
Another 14-years-old, TJ was the 1995 star Search winner who was invited to perform for the president at the White House the following year.
The boys are also good musicians, a skill they do not display in their shows.
"We might just surprise our fans one of these days," said 18-years-old Ryan.
He said their debut concert tour at the "Kid's Go Music" Festival in Germany early this year with the likes 911 and Aaron Carter was an awesome experience.
"We were then new kids on the block and it was our first major show in front of so many people," he gushed, adding that they did not know what to expect until they had the audience screaming for more.
The highlight of the concert tour was the rendition of the romantic track 'I Give', which towards the end of their 16-Germany tour, had entered the-German-Media-Control Charts.
And to top all the excitement, Take 5 would spontaneously break into acappella during media interviews, evidence enough to convince even the most hardened boyband sceptics of their talent and potential.
Take 5 shares the same managerment and record company as their equally famous counterparts Backstreet Boys, Solid Harmonie, Aaron Carter and 'N SYNC.
On their most embarrassing moments Steve said there was show when everything went wrong for him.
"I forgot my dance steps and made a fool of myself on stage," he said sheepishly, while Ryan said had to dance with his pants pulled up to his chest when the buttons popped while he was making some fancy moves.
Apart from his love for fast cars, Stevie is an avid basketball fan.
He was offered scholarships to play basketball but singing and dancing remained his first love.
Although they enjoy popstar status, the 5 have not put their studies on hold.
A private tutor follows Clay and TJ around while Tilky and Steve are seniors in high school.
Clay said they would study during their free time when they're on the plane, coach or in the hotel room.
Ryan, who plays classical piano and the cello, is first year in college.
He's taking an Accounting course until he decided on his major.
On their name, Take 5, Tilky, 17, said the name was derived from their showbiz background.
"Take 5" is a common term in their sphere of work.
"We hope to continue singing as long as there is an audience, maybe even outlasting the Rolling Stones," Tilky enthused.
