Whisked away to a far galaxy to fight in the secret wars, spider-mans red and blue costume was destroyed in the cosmic conflagration(look it up??) thinking it merely a strange fabric he donned the new black costume only to discover it could morph to resemble any cloth.   Back on earth, spidey learned the awful truth-it was a living alien being.   After ridding himself of it, with sound waves, spidey thought it harmless-until it later became the villainous venom.
