U2 ALBUM
DEBUTS AT NUMBER ONE IN UK |

Apparently, Number One on the British
charts is one of those All That You Can't
Leave Behind things for Irish rockers U2.
The quartet--whose single,
"Beautiful Day," also hit
Number One--scored its eighth
chart-topper on the U.K. album chart with
its latest outing, which debuted over
popular British acts Blur and Texas.
U2's first U.K. Number One was War in
1983, and the band members hope their
latest U.K. showing bodes well for a
debut atop this week's Billboard 200 in
the U.S.
U2 frontman Bono tells LAUNCH that these
strong chart showings redeem the effort
the group put into its new album.
"We knew that this was a record that
was against the odds," he says,
"and that a lot of people would be
thinking, You know, U2, they've gone all
arty, and, you know, they can live off
their past now, or else they'll come up
with some esoteric idea of the future.
And we thought we gotta really make
something that feels really
present--that's not about what's
fashionable this week, but what's about
the moment you're in right now."n |
