“How are you today?”, Dr. Emerick asked Haley and Brian when he came into the room. “We’re pretty good.”, Haley said smiling. “Great. If you will just lay down there, we’ll start on the sonogram.” Haley laid down on the table and Dr. Emerick put the cold goo on Haley’s stomach. “Okay.....right there is the baby’s heart.”, the doctor said pointing at the screen. “Does it look healthy?”, Brian asked hopefully. “Oh yes. This baby is as healthy as can be. It’s got a strong heart.” “Good.”, Brian said with wide eyes. “Do you want to know the baby’s sex?” Haley and Brian looked at each other wondering if they really wanted to know or not. The doctor noticed. “I’ll tell you what I’ll do. I’ll write it down on a piece of paper. You put it somewhere safe in the house and if you absolutely know for sure that you want to know, then look at this paper.” Dr. Emerick handed the paper to Brian and he fought back the urge to look at it. He stuffed it in his pocket. “Well, everything looks fine with the baby. You look healthy Haley. I think you have another healthy baby on your hands. You can get dressed and leave. I want to see you again in 2 weeks though.”, Dr. Emerick explained. “Okay. Thank you.”
“Brian. Put that piece of paper somewhere I can’t find it.”, Haley said putting her purse down. “Are you sure?” “Yes. I don’t want to know but I don’t know if I can trust myself when I know that piece of paper is in this house.” “Okay. I’ll hide it but I don’t know if I can trust myself.”, Brian said smiling and pulling the piece of paper out of his pocket. When Haley went into the bathroom, Brian hid the paper in a book on the mantle. “Haley will never find that.”, he proudly said to himself.
That night at the dinner table Haley was tapping her fork nervously on her plate. Tyler began to do it too. “See what you have done now. You got our son picking up your nervous habits!”, Brian said holding Tyler’s hand with the fork in it. “Oh sorry.”, Haley smiled. “If you want to know so bad, why don’t you ask me where the paper is and I will give it to you.” “That’s just it! I don’t want to know! I just know the answer is in this house and it is bugging me.” “Do you want me to throw it away?” “NO!!!!! I mean..uh....no.” Brian laughed at her. “Pregnant women. You can’t please ‘em.”
After they had put Tyler down for the night, Haley and Brian went to sleep. Well atleast Brian went to sleep. Haley could barely lay there. “Oh, I can’t take this anymore!”, Haley thought to herself. She looked over at Brian to make sure he was asleep. He was. She slowly and silently got out of bed and left the room. She went down the stairs very slowly so she wouldn’t wake anyone up. “Where did he put it?”, Haley said searching the living room. “Okay Haley. Think. If you were Brian, where would you put it?” “A book. He knows I have read all these books. I never read a book twice.” Haley went for the books. “What do you think you are doing?”, Brian asked from the stairs. Haley spun around very fast. “You scared me to death.” “Sorry honey.”, he said grinning and walking over to the mantle. He reached inside a book and took out the piece of paper. “Is this what you are looking for?”, Brian said handing it to her. “Yeah.”, she said shyly. “Look at it.” “Do you think we should?”, she asked confused. “If it will make you feel better then yeah.” They sat down on the couch together and Haley slowly opened the note. “You are having a boy or a girl.” is all that it said. “You have to be kidding me.”, Brian said turning the note over making sure there was no other writing on it. “He knew we would do this so he wrote that.”, Haley said laughing. “Well, now you don’t have to fight the urge to look anymore.”, Brian said crumpling up the paper. “I can’t believe we did this.” “Look at it this way Haley. Now it will be a surprise when it’s born.” “Yep.” “Let’s go back to bed.”
