This recording features a double-tracked lead vocal by Kidd who also
features on backing vocals, probably  with Johnny Spence.  Almost everyone
present sang on the refrain, including the band's manager George Cooper,
his friend Alan Wheeler (who later ran the Johnny Kidd Appreciation
        Society) and even Johnnie Irving,
the band's Roadie!  The demo, rougher than this polished version,
was in blue beat style and was described as having a much stronger riff
and sounding "far better than the out of recognition commercialised
version cut at St. Johns Wood".  This demo was performed a try-out of the PA
system at Leyton Baths on New Years Day 1964, the same day as "Top Of
The Pops" started broadcasting from a converted church in Manchester.  Kidd and the Pirates filmed "Always And Ever" for this show; it was
never televised due to it's low charting and although it was probably junked soon
after, rumour has it that it just may have survived somewhere. |
