Hurricane#1: Only the Strongest Will Survive

Released 9th February

I sometimes think I’m the only person on the planet
who actually like Hurricane #1. Admittedly they
can be monumentally dull live, but last year’s debut
album proved they’ve still got a few surprise
weapons in their classic rock arsenal. Moreover,
they aren’t the Seahorses which must be a plus
point in anyone’s book. And now, so soon after
that album release comes a brand new single,
displaying the sensitive side to their rocking ways.
A languorous, shuffling beat, sprinkled with
bongos, a subtle brass edge, maybe just a touch of
heart-tugging strings and Alex’s voice gruff but
relaxed. A ballad then, country-tinged, maybe not
Hurricane’s forte but pleasant enough and some
leagues ahead of anything Oasis have, or are likely
to, produce in recent times, although the line
‘Some days you’ve got to kill yourself just to
survive’ hardly registers on the Make
Sense-ometer. Off it lopes, carefree into the setting
sun.
