A Girl To Love
I looked around the club. Backstreet’s Boys’ ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’ was playing. My friends and I groaned. The two girls at our table laughed. Justin wrapped a protective arm around one of them. Lance held the other girl’s hand. Why is it that the two youngest in our groups were the first ones to get a girlfriend? Well, if it’s the youngest to the oldest, it’ll be a long time to go for me. I’m the oldest out of all of us. Being the oldest isn’t easy. People expect you to be mature, serious and responsible. Well, that’s not me. That’s JC. Am I sporty? Well, I guess I am but not as sporty as Justin. I’m not shy and quiet like Lance, I’m not a flirt like Joey. So, how do you describe me? I’m CRAZY! So, do girls like only the Jocks and sensitive boys? Well, I really hope not!
I remembered my best friend. Her name was Amanda and she’s two years younger than I am. I remember her dark hair and her blue green eyes, her bright smile, her voice. I remember the day we met. We met in Clarion, Pennsylvania. We were neighbors. When I moved in next door to her, she whacked me with a stick and we became best friends. I remember how much she liked New Kids on the Block and how cute Jordan Knight was. Trust me, listening to how cute he was wasn’t exactly what I want to hear. It was weird too, hanging with a bunch of thirteen-year-olds when I should have been hanging out with kids my own age. I remember her little sister. Man, she should be around Joey’s age now. Kelly. What a cutie! Pretty blond curls. When she was 10, she told me that she loves me. I just laughed. At that time, I was 15, clearly too old for her! I remember my first crush. It was a girl named Kara. She was my age, and yes, we did go out. It lasted for a month or so. Let’s just say that I’m unlucky in love, end of story.
“Tomorrow, we’re gonna meet this photographer chick who’s gonna be taking pictures of us on tour.” Said JC.
“I hope she’s cute.” Said Joey.
“What makes you think it’s a she?” Justin asked.
“Easy. I answered the phone. She sounds nice.” Replied Joey.
They all headed out to the dance floor. I didn’t feel like dancing. I was taking a trip down memory lane.
“Chris, do you want to dance?”
I looked up to see Melissa looking at me. Melissa and Tiffany are like sisters to me. They’re Lance and Justin’s girlfriends. Lance and Justin looked exhausted and JC was keeping them company. Lance and Justin probably told Mel and Tiff to dance with us to keep us company. Joey and Tiff were already hitting the floor, so I dragged Melissa up onto the dance floor too. We were dancing to ‘The Things You Do’ by 5ive, one of Melissa and Tiffany’s favorite groups. Then the song changed and a slow song came on. I wrapped my arms around Melissa’s waist and she wrapped her arms around my neck. We rocked back and forth on the dance floor until the song was over. We walked back to our table.
Melissa immediately walked to Lance. I swear they make such a cute couple.
“Oww Joey! I think you bruised my hip back there!” Tiffany said, rubbing her hip.
“Well, when you gotta dance, you gotta dance.” Joey said simply. He started to scan the crowd. “Jackpot.” He said.
“Well, Joey, I’d like to meet the lucky girl, but Tiffany and Melissa is practically dying, so we’re gonna take them home, ok?” asked Justin.
“Ok.” JC replied.
Joey continued to stare.
I looked in the direction he staring at. A pretty girl with curly blond hair walked in. She was wearing a dark blue dress. She turned to her friend, who’s about the same age, with shoulder length brown hair. Her friend was wearing a light blue dress. They were gorgeous, but they’re young. They look like their 5 years younger than I am.
JC was looking at the girls too. “Man, they’re cute. Come on Joey.” He said.
I watched them walked to the girls and asked them to dance. They swept them off their feet on the dance floor.
I started to rip my napkin. I was at it for a while when I noticed Joey, JC and the girls walking towards me.
“Hey Chris, meet Kelly and Jade.” Said Joey.
“Nice to meet you.” I said politely. Kelly. Kelly?! Could it be? “Kelly, where are you from?”
“Oh, I grew up in Clarion, Pennsylvania, but moved here when I was 16.” She replied.
“Do you have a sister, Amanda?” I asked.
“Yes I do!” she exclaimed. “Do I know you?”
“I am Chris Kirkpatrick. I was your neighbor and was your sister’s best friend!” Not to mention that you had a crush on me...
“Oh my god!” she exclaimed.
I showed her my wallet. Inside was a school picture of Amanda and one of Kelly.
“Oh my god Kell, was that you?” Jade exclaimed.
“Yes! Chris put it away! I look horrible in that picture!” Kelly cried.
“Wait a minute! Could you please back up a bit?” Asked JC, holding his hands up.
“Ok. Kelly and I know each other. I was best friends with her sister, Amanda.” I said.
“Really. Where’s Amanda?” Joey asked Kelly.
“Amanda stayed in Clarion when we moved because she was old enough to take care of herself. Now, I know that she’s here because her boss got her a job to be the photographer for some singing group.”
“Do you know the name of the group?” I asked, taking a drink of my coke.
“It’s Syncers or something.” Kelly replied.
“*N Sync?” JC asked.
“Yeah. I heard they’re like the Backstreet Boys.” Said Kelly.
I choked on my coke and started coughing. JC and Joey looked speechless.
“What’s wrong?” Kelly asked when I recovered.
“*N Sync is not like the Backstreet Boys!” I exclaimed.
“How would you know? You’re not like one of those guys who likes to listen to those teenybopper boy bands, right?”
“No! We’re *N Sync!” said Joey.
Kelly and Jade stared at us. “You’re kidding!”
“No.”
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry I insulted you guys!” cried Kelly.
“It’s ok.” Joey smiled.
“So, where’s the other guys? I heard that there are five of them.” Said Kelly.
“Yeah, Lance and Justin are back in the hotel.”
“How old are they?” Jade asked.
“Don’t even think that way Jady.” JC said with a smile. “They’re younger than you and they both have girlfriends.”
“Well, are you available?” Jade asked JC.
“Why yes I am.” JC said teasingly.
“Good, because I like you.” Jade said.
“Aww. I like you too.”
“Hate to ruin the moment, but we gotta get back to the hotel.” I said.
“Come on! Let’s say longer.” Whined JC.
“I can’t believe that JC is the one who wanted to stay!” said Joey. “I hate to say it, but Chris is right.”
“Right.” I said, not thinking. “Hey!”
“Why don’t we exchange numbers and addresses and meet tomorrow…when we meet the new photographer?” I suggested.
“Ok.” They agreed and started to write down their phone numbers down on napkins.
“You’ll get to meet the other guys tomorrow.” Said JC. He leaned down and kissed Jade softly on the lips. Joey kissed Kelly.
Me? I just sighed.
JC noticed this and looked over at me. “Chris, don’t worry, buddy.” He said.
Why does this have to happen to me? Why is it that I’m never the one to be loved?
I sighed again, gave a wave to Jade and Kelly, and walked out the door with JC and Joey.
The drive back to the hotel was difficult too. Joey and JC were talking about Kelly and Jade. I am always the one that’s outside the crowd.
We drove back to the hotel. I walked into my room and changed. My head touched the pillow and fell into a deep sleep.
I woke up to the sun shining into my eyes. It’s a great day today. I glanced over to JC who’s sleeping in the other bed. He was snoring, as usual. I glanced at my watch. It was 9:00am. We’re meeting the girls in two hours. We’re going to meet our photographer. We’re going to meet Amanda. I’m going to meet Amanda.
I got up and took a quick shower. My mind thinking about Amanda. Amanda. Amanda. Amanda. I shook the thought out of my head. She was really mad at me when I told her that I was moving to Orlando. She was angry.
I walked out of the bathroom, and JC was still sleeping. I got dressed and walked into Lance and Melissa’s hotel room. Melissa was up, and she gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek when she spotted me.
“We have to wake him up.” I said to Melissa.
“I’ll do it.” She said. She walked over to Lance and kneeled down by his head. “Lance, honey. Time to wake up.” She said, giving him a soft kiss on the lips. When Lance didn’t move, she looked at me. “Chris, wanna go take a shower with me?” she asked mischievously.
Lance’s eyes popped open and he sprang up. “Hell no!” he cried.
Melissa and I laughed. She leaned over and gave Lance a peck on the lips.
“Time to wake up Justin.” I said, walking out the door.
Tiffany was up as well when I walked into their room. Tiffany gave me a quick hug and asked, “Could you please wake Justin up?”
“Sure.” I walked by Justin's ear and screamed, “FIRE!”
Justin sprang out of bed and fell to the floor. “Where’s the fire?” he saw Tiffany and I laughing and gave us a glare. “Tiff, you were in on it too?” he asked with a pout.
I just laughed and walked out of the door, and into Joey’s room. He was up and at it, so I left him alone.
When I went back into my room, JC was still sleeping and we’re meeting the girls in half an hour! I walked out of the room and to the ice machine. I got a bucket of ice, lifted up his shirt and poured the bucket of ice on his bare skin.
Well, that woke him up all right!
“SHIT!” he screamed. “Chris DAMMIT!” JC jumped out of bed and into the bathroom.
I just stood there laughing. JC should’ve known that I’d wake him up the hard way!
Well, all of us went downstairs in no time. JC and Joey were looking at themselves in the elevator mirror.
“You two must like those girls.” Commented Melissa.
“Yeah, they’re really cute.” Said Joey.
“Can’t wait to meet them.” Said Melissa.
“There they are!” exclaimed JC when the elevator doors opened. There, on the main floor stood Kelly and Jade. Kelly was wearing a light purple tank top and black jeans, and Jade was wearing a pair of white jeans and a black tank.
JC and Joey introduced the girls to Lance, Justin, Melissa and Tiffany. They got along with Melissa and Tiffany got along instantly.
“So, when’s the photographer coming, Lance?” Justin asked.
“The photographer is right here.”
We all turned around and saw our manager standing there, with a pretty girl by his side. It’s got to be Amanda. “Guys, this is Amanda. She will be our photographer.”
“Amanda?” I croaked.
“C-Chris?” Amanda stuttered.
“Hey Mandy.” Said Kelly.
“Hey Kelly!” said Amanda, giving her younger sister a hug. She looked from Kelly to Chris.
“When did you two meet?” she asked.
“Yesterday.” I replied.
Amanda chatted with the guys for awhile. They didn’t notice me walking away into a coffee shop.
I walked over to a table and buried my face in my hands.
“It must be weird, meeting her again, huh?”
I looked up and saw Melissa’s dark eyes looking at me with concern.
“How would you know how I feel?” I asked.
“I’ve gone through it, remember?” she said. “Or somewhat similar.”
I remember.
~*~*~Flashback...
Lance, Justin and I walked into the store to get some junk food. We were walking into the store when two girls came out. Lance walked right into one of the girls, making her stuff fall to the ground.
“I’m sorry.” Lance began. He looked up and his expression changed instantly. “What are you doing here?” he asked bitterly.
“Excuse me for living, Lansten, but I do live here!” the girl said angrily.
“Unfortunately.” Lance replied.
“What is that supposed to mean?” the girl demanded.
“It means Melissa, that we were never friends in the first place and we’ll never will be!”
“Go to hell!” the girl said angrily. She turned to her friend. “Come on Tiffany, this a-hole is not worth it!”
“I am not an a-hole, you bitch!”
“Yes you are!”
The fight went on for a while. While those two were screaming at each other, Justin and Melissa’s friend, Tiffany chatted.
Melissa and Lance are total opposites. Lance is quiet, shy and not as athletic, while Melissa is loud, talkative and very athletic.
It turns out that Lance’s group and Melissa’s groups were total enemies. They hated each other. After a couple of days, Melissa and Lance got closer, and one night, after Justin and Tiffany’s secret date, they saw Lance and Melissa kissing softly on the couch. That was the beginning of two beautiful relationships.
~*~*~End Flashback...
“I remember.” I said flatly.
“Chris, quit being your stubborn self and talk to me.”
“Look, I miss Amanda and I broke her heart when I told her I was leaving. She told me that she’d never forgive me, ok? Are you satisfied?”
“Amanda might be different. She probably misses you, like how Kelly misses you. Remember you and Amanda were really close. You two have a special bond. Don’t loose it.” Melissa said. And with that, she left the coffee shop and left me sitting there.
I walked back into the lobby to join the rest of them. I saw Amanda. She was looking straight at me. Everyone else went shopping, so I’m stuck with her. I know they set me up. It has to be Justin. Remind me to kill him.
“So Amanda, what are you doing here?” I asked as I followed her into her hotel room.
“What do you think? I’m here to take pictures!” she said.
“Testy!” I said.
“Shut up!”
I walked into the room. She walked up to me.
“Chris Kirkpatrick, you’ve hurt me when you told me that you’re leaving!” she screamed. “We shouldn’t meet like this!”
“You know, I don’t want this to happen either!”
“I hate you!”
“I hate you!”
Then something weird happened. She lunged over and kissed me! I didn’t protest. I kissed her back. You know what’s great? I finally got a girl to love.
