Feb. 20, 1967 Kurt Donald Cobain is born near Aberdeen, Washington.
1975 - Kurt's parents, Donald & Wendy, get a divorce. Kurt is 8, and he turns into a moody, withdrawn child.
1976 - Kurt's mother sends him to his father, and he is shuffled from relative to relative for the next few years.
1978 - Kurt starts liking rock music.
Early 1980 - Kurt gets into New Wave after seeing the B-52's on "Saturday Night Live".
Feb. 20, 1981 - Kurt gets a guitar & amp for his birthday and starts writing music.
Summer of 1984 - Kurt hears punk rock, and it transforms his life.
May of 1985 - Kurt drops out of High School. His mother kicks him out of the house and he is homeless for nearly a year. Around this time, Kurt tries heroin for the first time.
Summer of 1985 - Kurt's first live performance takes place in Olympia, Washington. Buzz Osbourne played bass, and Dale Crover was on drums.
Fall of 1985 - Kurt meets Chris Novoselic, and they play in several bands together.
Winter of 1985 - Kurt records a demo at his aunt's house with Dale Crover on drums.
December, 1987 - Kurt, Chris, and drummer Aaron Burckhard form Nirvana.
Spring of 1987 - The band plays their first gig.
Fall of 1987 - Kurt moved to Olympia with his girlfriend, Tracy Marander. A few months later, he began experiencing a mysterious burning pain in his stomach.
Jan. 23, 1988 - Nirvana made a 10-song demo tape with producer Jack Endino. Sub-Pop offers to make a Nirvana single, and they accept.
Early Spring of 1988 - Burckhard is kicked out of the band, and is replaced by Dave Foster, who lasts a couple of months. Burckhard rejoins and then is kicked out again for getting Kurt's car impounded while going on a beer run.
July of 1988 -Burkhard is replaced by Chad Channing.
October, 1988 -1000 copies of the "Lovebuzz/Big Cheese" single is released.
October 30, 1988 -Kurt smashes his first guitar at a Halloween dorm party at Evergreen State University in Olympia.
December 1988, January 1989 -Nirvana begins putting down basic tracks for their debut album for Sub Pop with Jack Endino. The recording budget comes to a grand total of $606.17, paid for by Jason Everman, who joined the band soon afterward as second guitarist.
June of 1989 -"Bleach" is released, and the band goes on tour for a month in the US. Everman is kicked out of the band at the end.
October 20, 1989 -Nirvana begins a six-week European tour with TAD.
December of 1989 -The "Blew" EP is released in the UK.
April/May of 1990 -Another US tour; at the end, Channing is booted from the band.
August of 1990 -Nirvana opens for Sonic Youth on a West Coast tour. Dale Crover sits in on drums.
September 22, 1990 -Nirvana plays the Motor Sports International and Garage with Mudhoney's Dan Peters on drums. Peters gets the boot a few days later.
September 25, 1990 -David Grohl from Scream joins Nirvana.
October of 1990 -Nirvana tours briefly in England with L7.
April 30, 1991 -Nirvana signs with Geffen DGC Records.
May/June of 1991 -Nirvana records "Nevermind" with Butch Vig.
June of 1991 -Nirvana does a brief tour in the US opening for Dinosaur Jr.
August of 1991 -Nirvana opens for Sonic Youth on a European festival tour, including a landmark performance at the Reading Festival.
September 20, 1991 -Nirvana kicks off a six-week US tour.
September 24, 1991 -"Nevermind" is released.
October 12, 1991 -"Nevermind" debuts on the "Billboard" albums chart at #144.
October 29, 1991 -"Nevermind" goes gold.
November 2, 1991 -The band goes on a six-week European tour as Nirvanamania sweeps the US. MTV constantly plays the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. The song is hailed as the anthem for a generation.
November of 1991 -"Nevermind" goes platinum.
December of 1991 -Nirvana does a quick US tour with Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
January 11, 1992 -"Nevermind" hits #1 on the "Billboard" albums chart. The same day, Nirvana plays on "Saturday Night Live".
January/February of 1992 -Nirvana tours Austrailia, New Zeland, Japan, and Hawaii.
February 1, 1992 -"Nevermind" goes back to #1.
February 24, 1992 -Kurt marries Courtney Love in Hawaii.
June/early July of 1992 -Nirvana tours Europe.
August of 1992 -Lynn Hirschberg reports in "Vanity Fair" that Love used heroin during her pregnancy.
August 18, 1992 -Frances Bean Cobain is born. Children's Services of Los Angeles County immediately revokes custody of the child, a direct result of media attention to the "VF" story.
December 15, 1992 -"Incesticide," a collection of B sides and rarities, is released.
February of 1993 -Nirvana records "In Utero" in Cannon Falls, Minn., with Steve Albini.
March 23, 1993 -L.A. Family Court rules that children's services stop its supervision of Love and Cobain's child-rearing practices.
March/April of 1993 -Geffen DGC is rumored to be considering rejecting the album.
June 4, 1993 -Love calls the police after having an argument with Kurt. The police confiscate three guns and hold Kurt in jail for three hours.
July of 1993 -Nirvana plays an unanounced show at Irving Plaza in New York City during the New Music Seminar.
September 21, 1993 -"In Utero" is released.
October 18, 1993 -Nirvana begins their first U.S. tour in two years.
February 5, 1994 -Nirvana begins a European tour
March 6, 1994 -While on tour in Rome, Cobain falls into a coma after ingesting a reported 50 doses of Rohypnol and an unspecified amount of champagne. He awakens 20 hours later. He denies reports that the Rome incident was a suicide attempt.
March 18, 1994 -Love calls the police to report that Kurt locked himself in a room with a revolver and is threatening to kill himself. Police confiscate the gun.
March 31, 1994 -Kurt checks into the Exodus Recovery Center in the Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital, in Marina del Ray, California.
April 1, 1994 -After only two days in residence, Kurt escapes from Exodus by climbing over a wall.
April 8, 1994 -Kurt Cobain is found dead in a
room above the garage of his Seattle home. Police reports indicate that
he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on April 5th. He
was 27.
