My Heart Will Go On

-- A Time For Rest --

The water swished against Nick's feet but he scarcely noticed it. He stared out over the ocean as he held the little jar in his hands. A hundred tear filled eyes watched his every move. Nick sighed through his tears and opened the jar. He walked onto the dock and looked down in the crystal water. Slowly, Nick gained his courage and used all his strength to pour the contents of the small jar into the swishing ocean. With a sigh, Nick turned around to the others and smiled half way. Inside, his heart was crying. He felt that he'd never be able to get over that moment. Nick walked by the icy stares and to his truck. He sat down in his truck and placed his head on the steering wheel. His heart cried loudly. Then, Michelle walked up to him, tears in her eyes. He reached out and pulled her close to him. She sobbed into his chest. Nick felt as if tears were welling up in his own eyes, but he couldn't let them out. "She would have wanted it this way, sweetheart." Michelle assured Nick. "I know it. I just…" Nick broke down. Michelle grasped hold of his hand. "Sweetheart, we're going through this together. We have to work with it." Michelle said. "I know. You just don't understand…" Nick stated. "Honey, I do. I know she was your daughter but I loved her too. Baby, Let's get through this together." Michelle said compassionately. Nick reached over and kissed her forehead as a hundred onlookers walked by. He had gotten through the worst day he'd ever had. He had survived. But now the question was if he could survive the next weeks and months that passed. Only time would tell him the answer. Michelle walked to the other side of the truck and hopped in. Nick cranked the huge automobile and pulled away from the sight of his little girl's resting place. He sighed as he exited the cemetery.

-- Hard Times --

"Chelsea Anne, come here." Nick yelled through the huge house. "Sir?" Chelsea asked as she walked in. She had a little green shirt with blue shorts on and a green hat. "Here, let me tie your shoes." Nick said as he reached down to tie the five year old's shoes. "Thanks daddy." Chelsea said as she reached up and kissed him on the cheek. "You're welcome. Now, hurry up and get your backpack. You're going to be late for school." Nick said as he picked up her lunch box and handed it to her. She took it and ran for the living room and found her backpack. "Now, have a good day and I love you." Nick said as he kissed her on the cheek and straightened her hat. "Love you too daddy." Chelsea said as she exited the house quickly to catch the bus. Little did that 25 year old man know that this would be the last time he'd ever see his little daughter alive.

The Bus Ride:

"Michael! Move outta Chelsea's seat!" Little Kaitlyn Shepherd shouted at the other five year old that sat in Chelsea's seat. He looked at her through mean eyes and slowly moved back to his seat. Chelsea sat down. She sat her book bag next to her and her lunch box, too. "Hey Chelsea. How are you?" Kaitlyn asked her. "I'm okay. How's your mamma and dad?" Chelsea asked. "Oh, mom told daddy last night that I'm having a brother or sister. Cool, huh?" Kaitlyn asked. "Wow. That's so cool. I wish Michelle would have a baby. I want a baby brother." Chelsea said with a giggle. "Your daddy is sooo cute." Kaitlyn said with a shy smile. "Ewww. No he isn't. He's old. He's like 25 years old. Plus, he's got yellow hair. I don't like guys with yellow hair." Chelsea said with a giggle. "I still think he's cute." Kaitlyn said. "So, what are you gonna name your baby brother?" Chelsea asked her. "I want to name him Bobo. But mamma says that she doesn't like that name." Kaitlyn said. "I like it. So, can I have half of your lunch today? Daddy packed me a peanut butter sandwich. I HATE peanut butter. I thought maybe We could swap stuff." Chelsea said. "Sure. My mamma packed a ham sandwich. I hate ham and I LOVE peanut butter. Want to trade?" Kaitlyn asked. "Sure. I like ham." Chelsea said. "Oh, Mrs. Mobley said we had to practice dotting the letter I's she gave us. I forgot to do it. I hope she isn't mad." Kaitlyn said. "Oh no. I forgot that too." Chelsea said. They giggled. "We'll be in time out together." Kaitlyn said.

The bus stopped to pick up to 4th graders. They got on and took their seats. "Is it going to rain?" One kid asked. "It looks like it." One of the fourth graders answered. The bus crossed a street and turned a corner. The kids all were talking and laughing. Then the bus hit a huge bump and went sailing through the air. One of the fourth graders flew into the seat in front of Chelsea. Kaitlyn was screaming in fear and Chelsea was hugging her. The bus landed on its feet and sent a sudden jolt through them all. The driver screamed as soon as she saw what was ahead of where she'd landed. Directly in front of the bus was a semi truck squealing its breaks. It was to much avail. The truck was heading straight at them. "I WANT MY MAMMA!" Many of the kids screamed. "Get on the ground and hold to your seats!" Chelsea yelled. Many people listened to her. But some didn't. She got up to go tell someone to get down. She was standing when the impact occurred. The jolt sent Chelsea through the windshield. Many kids screamed loudly. Some were just scared, some were in pain. The next thing everyone knew, they were in the hospitals being checked out.

-- The Phone Call --

Nick was sitting in his studio listening to a song when he heard the phone ring. He reached over and picked it up. "Hello?" He said. "Hey sweetheart. Do you miss me?" Michelle's voice came over the receiver. "As always. What's happening?" Nick asked. "Oh, well, mom and dad are taking me out to supper tonight. I thought I'd call you and see how you and Chelsea bug were doing without me around." Michelle said. "We're doing great MOM. I'm telling ya, you're getting worse by the day." Nick said with a laugh. "I know. I just worry about you and Chelsea. What's one to do with the worry?" Michelle asked. "Put it to something constructive." Nick said with a laugh." Start another award winning organization baby. You've done it before, why not do it again." Nick said. Michelle had founded the SANYO organization. SANYO stood for San Francisco and New York Young Orphans Organization. She'd started it because statistics read that San Francisco and New York were the only two states in the USA that had high orphan problems and yet had no orphanages. The organization had won Michelle three awards and a nomination for the Nobel Peace prize. "Okay, I'll do that sweetheart. Hey, I got to go now. Tell Chelsea I love her." Michelle said. "Okay I will. I love you." Nick said. "Love you too." Michelle said. They clicked the phones and not even ten seconds later, the phone rang again. "Michelle…" Nick started but was interrupted by a deep beckoning voice. "Mr. Carter. I need you to come to Florida Hospital. It concerns your daughter, Chelsea Carter." The deep voice said. "Is she okay?" Nick asked, his heart rate quickening. "I'm not at liberty to disclose information. Please come as soon as possible." The man said. "I can be there in ten minutes." Nick said as he hung up the phone. He grabbed his keys and wallet and rushed out of the house. He locked the door and jumped in his truck.

In The Truck:

Nick dialed his cellular phone on speed dial number 4. After three rings, the machine picked up. "Mr. And Mrs. Hallaway, this is Nick. If you can, tell Michelle that I called and it's VERY urgent she calls me. Tell her to call me on my cell phone. It concerns Chelsea." Nick said. He hung up his cell phone and said a silent prayer for Chelsea.
