With an ear-piercing roar, the crowds at Distorted Penguins concerts cheer and applaud with the ferocity to power a small town. With each live, energetic show, DP has watched their audience grow into a rampant, wild following of devoted fans that know the words to songs that have yet to be recorded.
“Best band of the week my a$$, they should be THE BAND period” proclaimed one fan in response to the recent Distorted Penguins feature as “Band of the Week” on the Pittsburgh Scene Website.
Powered by the star brilliance of “Magic” Dave Mussen since early 1996, the Distorted Penguins have become a household name in the Morgantown/Pittsburgh music scene. After “Magic Dave’s” tragic death in April of 2000 the remaining members of DP have made a few changes in their line-up so they could keep his message alive. Shying away from labeling their music as strictly 'ska,' they have combined power pop, rock, and horns to create an energetic and faster paced style of music deemed “Falling Rock”.
With performances at the Vans Warped Tour, numerous colleges, bars, and nightclubs, DP has worked feverishly to branch out into NY, WV, PA, MD, OH, and VA.
Through radio airplay on multiple national and college radio stations, a featured song on the Pittsburgh X-Files 2001 Compilation CD, and singles included on several episodes of MTV’s Undressed, DP is earning national recognition in the D.I.Y fashion of the music industry. And it shows, as fans throughout the United States, England, France and Australia have proven their love with over 230,000 downloads on mp3.com and 10,000 web hits a month. Impressive numbers that any major label should be ashamed to overlook. "Dope ska with awesome horns, great singing, a great beat, and an infections chorus in every song. These songs are considered a must for any MP3.com ska fan." - Ska Nation -
DP has contributed their songs to independent movies and video games, as well as special CD compilations to help raise money for the American Red Cross, the Children's Hospital of Boston, teen suicide prevention, domestic violence, and charities that help battered women and children.
Bands they have performed with include Reel Big Fish, 2 Skinnee J’s, Buzz Poets, Blues Traveler, Blue Oyster Cult, Blessid Union of Souls, Less Than Jake, and O.A.R.
