Emerged from the small town of Bakersfield, California, Korn has emanated from oblivion to become one of the most popular new bands of the decade, assembled from a subterraneous fan base worldwide through touring and not just MTV perception.
With the harsh expressions, urban pulses, angsty rap-metal, and viscously emotional vocals of Jonathan Davis, former lead-singer of Sex-Art, teamed up with the heart-beat of David Silveria, the roaring sounds of James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch, and the percussive-sounding bass of Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu, we bring to you...KORN.
After nearly two years of touring with Ozzy Osbourne, 311, Marilyn Manson, KMFDM, and Megadeth, Korn made a propagandist resonance that re-established heavy metal incomparable to any other band of the millennium. The result of this was a miscreant debut album from Korn (self-titled) in 1994 that sold over 700,000 copies and made the album soar to platinum. With this, they built a large, loyal fan-base of reclusive small4own teens. When their follow-up album, Life Is Peachy debuted at number three in 1996 and produced hits like "A.D.I.D.A.S." signaling that despite its uncompromising sound, this savage band had a fan base with over tw6-million people.
"It is a great feeling but we've got great fans, without them we wouldn't be what we are now. I mean look, we played our way up and they supported us even before we were known and that is what keeps us down to earth." says Jonathan.
Being a band constantly on the cutting edge, Korn kept fans conscious of their presence between Life Is Peachy and the making of their new album (to be titled "Follow The Leader") with KornTV. From this base, Korn kept the buzz constant and the fans satisfied with keeping them up-to-date and letting them have an inside look as Follow The Leader was created.
"Look at it, just a while back rock bands used to release two albums each year, now a lot of bands wait three years until they're back, that's crap!"
Korn decided to take this a step further by launching the Korn Kampaign where they traveled across the country and promoted the release of their new album. At Korn Kampaign in New York City there were 7,000 people waiting to meet Korn. Just comes to show you how much Korn means to their die-hard fans. With all the hype and anticipation of the new album, Follow The Leader debuted at number one in August 1998 and to date has sold over three million albums in America.
Fans who thought Korn's first album was the superlative, you better get ready! Korn is back with vengeance. Korn's new album to be released November 16, 1999, still has the old-school Korn as well as the far-most passionate songs by Jonathan Davis that tell the story of his life. The songs "Falling Away From Me" and "Beg For Me" that were first performed at Woodstock are guaranteed to punch you in the gut.
Throughout the making of their colossal albums and touring, Korn developed their own record label, Elementree Records. Korn has signed Orgy and Limp Bizkit to their record label as well as having them join them on their Family Values Tour. Family Values became Korn's own Lollapalooza. The first year of the eight-week Family Values 1998 with Korn also included popular bands like Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Ice Cube, and Rammstein. This year, Family Values is not including Korn in the overall line-up. Korn turned over Family Values to their "brother band" Limp Bizkit.
"We really like them (Limp Bizkit), otherwise we wouldn't have signed them. I think they found a style of their own' a style that's really them. If you take a look at the development the band went through, I really do think it's great. On their first album they sounded a lot like Korn, but now they're an act that can hold it's own. They don't owe anything to another band!"
Korn chose not participate in Family Values this year so they could concentrate on producing their new album with Brendan O'Brian (Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam).
As Korn would say "Nothing changes, just rearranges."
