One Last Cry

By Jessica

Alec sat by Brian's grave carrying a single white rose, the kind he bought her on her birthday. It was her birthday, and four days after the accident. His funeral had been a day before, but she had chosen to wait and say her good-byes privately.

The rose had arrived without delay, along with a bottle of red wine, just like the year before, and the year before that. She remembered running upstairs to thank him, only to have the realization that he was dead retake her in an instant.

Even though she had been horrified by the last ghostly good-bye, she was grateful for it. Alec wasn't crying though. She hadn't since that day. She felt horrible and missed him terribly, but couldn't bring herself to cry, and she didn't know why.

Someone in the apartment complex across the street turned on their radio, and as Alec sang along a single tear rolled down her cheek:

    One last cry
Before I leave it all behind
I've gotta put you out of my mind, this time -
    Stop living a lie
    I guess I'm down
    To one last cry

Alec whiped the tear from her cheek, then slowly stood and walked away, leaving a solitary white rose resting on Brian's grave.
