CHAPTER TWO: Holding On To Death
By Jessica
Brian didn't know what to do, "Cassandra...?"
"They can't hear you because you're dead," she said, answering his unasked question opposed to the one he had asked.
"I can't be dead," Brian remembered falling from the balcony, "It was just a dream."
"Come with me, Brian," Cassandra took his hand and led him out of the house to the apartment complex where they had held his birthday party the night before.
"What happened here?" Brian asked, slowly approaching the taped off area, already knowing the answer.
"You died," Cassandra said.
"No," he shook his head in disbelief.
"Fine," Cassandra said, losing her pacience, she had never been very pacient anyway, "Come with me."
She led him up to the apartment where he had supposedly taken a forty foot head dive.
Nick was holding , who was sobbing uncontrolably.
"What's this supposed to mean?" Brian asked.
Cassandra lost what little pacience she had left, "Don't you understand? You're dead. They can't see you or hear you. You're gone as far as they're concerned, in heaven, living the good life, but you're not!"
Acacia looked up.
"What's wrong?" Nick asked.
"Nothing, I just thought I heard something for a moment... look, I have to go, ok?"
"Sure, need a ride?" he asked concerned.
"N-no, I'll see you later, k?" she walked out of the room.
Brian turned to Cassandra, "Why am I not in heaven?"
"Because there's something in their world you're holding on to. You have to let go of it before you move on," Cassandra tried to explain.
"Why are you still here? What is it you're holding on to? What am I holding on to?" Brian was confused.
"You're what I couldn't let go of," she took his hand, "I waited five years for you... I can't leave you here. As for what you're holding on to, it's not life, it's death."
"Death?" he asked confused.
"You fell?" she continued to probe, "Or did someone push you... or did you jump?"
Brian thought hard for a moment, "I don't remember."
