Chastity hung up the phone, still in tears. Then slowly began packing her bags.
Niama had left for work already, so Chastity left a not with her new address and phone number, then walked out, locking the door behind her.
When Chastity reached her appartment she didn't know what to do. She didn't feel like unpacking, but since there was nothing else to do, she opened a box. On the top sat an old yearbook.
Chastity slowly pulled it out and opened it to the front cover. One signature stood out among the others. It was short and simple:
Friends 'til the end.
fffff~Ashley~
ffffffffps. call me
Underneath was scratched a barely legible phone number.
Chastity sat a moment and thought. She and Ashley had been best friends for years, then they had stopped talking for some reason. Chastity couldn't remember why, but when she flipped to the page that the choir was featured on, she remembered.
Ashley had always wanted to sing, but, like Chastity's parents, her's wanted her to go to college. So off Ashley had gone, and they hadn't seen each other since.
Picking up her phone, Chastity dialed her old friend's number.
"Hello?" came a very tired voice.
"Can I speak with Ashley?" Chastity asked, "Ashley Clare?"
"No, she's sleeping, who is this?"
"Oh, um... Chastity, tell her it's Chastity, please."
"Ash!" the guy screamed, "It's for you... some girl named Chastity!"
A moment later a new voice came from the phone, "Chas? You calling from Orlando?"
"Yeah," Chastity said smiling, glad her friend remembered, "How'd you know?"
"Well, I just got back yesterday from my first simester of college... it's going pretty good, but God how I wish I could be there with you! So anyway, I decided to swing by your house and see how you were, and... well, you know."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you," Chastity said, "I meant to call, it's just... wow, I've been so busy! I've already got a record deal, and I -"
"Chas? I have to go," Ashley said.
"Oh, no prob. I'll call back later, k?"
"Sure," then Ashley hung up.
