Here's an
interview that I translated from a French mag. The interview was done when
Serial Joe came to Montreal August 21rst 1999.
What made
you wanna play hard rock music?
Ryan:This
style of music gives us the possibility to enjoy ourselves. And of course
there's also the influence of all the other groups that we've been listening
to.
Dan:(I
can't translate it... stupid French words. If anyone can help.. contact
me!)
What bands
do you listen to?
Ryan:Silverchair's
album Neon Ballroom, and Rage Against the Machine.
Dan:
Limp Bizkit and Esthero, an excellent duo from Toronto.
If you weren't
in the music biz., what would you be doing?
Ryan:
Sports, such as skateboarding or mountain
biking.
Dan:
I would probably work in the middle of the
city, because I love it! Montreal is a beautiful city-- and it's not as
polluted and dirty like Vancouver!
Do you go
to school?
Ryan:
Of course, and I'm hoping to go to university
someday soon. I don't know what the others wanna do, but I'm gonna continue
going to school.
Dan:
My parents work at the university so I don't
really have a choice! *laughs* But my friends and I don't really talk about
school. It's a boring subject to talk about, if you know what I mean!
Does it
bother you when people talk about you guys being so young?
Ryan:
It depends. If they consider us like objects
that attract their curiosity, then yes it does! But if people are suprised
that guys as young as us can do what we do, it's really flattering and
we thank people for thinking that.
Dan:
Being 15, doesn't mean we can't write good
songs. And I think that we proved that with our new album, Face Down.
What changed
in your lives since you've been in Serial Joe?
Ryan:
My voice changed, it's much more deeper. I
like it! (He better... it's sexy!)
Dan:
We also got better, but I'm anxious to get
older to progress even more. It's frustrating when you can't play your
instrument perfectly. (No one's perfect...)
What's one
of your dreams?
Ryan:
To be a band that is recognized around the
world.
Dan: To
stay in this buisness for as long as possible.
Ryan:
Maybe not for 50 years, but for quite awhile!
*laughs*
Who would
you like to work with one day?
Ryan:
Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn
or Silverchair!
Dan:
Or with a DJ! It'd be cool. But right now,
we're working on what we've done so far.
Do you guys
speak French?
Ryan:
I already lived in Sudbury, a French part
in Ontario; I do know a bit. Sadly, I don't run into anyone that I can
talk French to! (*coughs* Ryan, I speak French... come and talk to me
anytime. Hehehe)
Dan:
I can say "bonjour" and "au revoir" but that's
about it. I got a C in French class... So I still have a long way to go!
What does
the year 2000 tell you?
Ryan:
I'm not gonna make a big deal about it. I
think that people are going overboard with that question. The third world
countries might have serious problems with their computer equipment, but
nothing serious will happen in North America.
Dan:
I don't believe that the planet will explode
the 31rst of December. And the new millennium is supposed to begin in 2001,
right? The 20th century ends the 31rst of December 2000, and the 21rst
century begins in January 2001, so why make a big deal about it?
