It all started when Mary Anne Hobbs asked Liam to make a DJ mix for her Radio One show, Breezeblock. At first Liam did not want to do it but than he changed his mind and did the mix. The original Breezeblock mix was played on Radio One October 12 in Mary-Anne Hobbs' Breezeblock show.

"I went to my record collection and just listened to about 300 old tracks. That's something I haven't done for years, just listened to music for the sheer pleasure of it," said Liam. The mix was sensational. It contained various artists, such as Public Enemy, Ultramagnetic MC's, the Chemical Brothers, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. Here is the full track listing of the Breezeblok mix:

"When I did it, I really enjoyed it. The album is just me - the music is where the inspiration for the Prodigy comes from. It won't sell many copies but it's important that the fans have something that's full of stuff that's in my head when I'm writing", said Liam.

Liam wanted to do an album of the mix but he had to re-work the mix a lot due to clearance problems. For example, Liam was not allowed to use Beatles' 'Sargeant Pepper'. Liam told in Selewct Magazine that "He (Paul McCartney) faxed me back, saying as far as he has concerned it was no problem. But that left everyone else the chance to turn it down." One of the most important tracks on the album was 'New York' by the Sex Pistols. At first John Lydon did not allow Liam to use the track on the mix but the day before New Year's Eve he phoned to Liam and allowed the use of 'New York'. He (John Lydon) said he was in a bad mood the day he turned it down. Liam wasn't able to use Biz Markie's 'Nobody Beats The Biz' because the song contained an uncleared sample and there was law suit going on even though the song was over ten years old.

However, a few promo CD-Rs were made which contained a special promo mix, containing a special intro. The special intro is only available on a CD-R promo copy, only 25 copies made! So one can say that there is three different kind of mixes: the Breezeblock mix, a special mix (available only on CD-R promo), and the final The Dirtchamber Sessions Volume One.

The actual album was titled 'Prodigy Present The Dirtchamber Sessions Volume One'. The name 'Dirt Chamber' is actually Liam's home studios' name. The album was released 15.2.1999 on CD and cassette but not on vinyl. "It's not supposed to be a full-scale Prodigy album and I don't want to people to think that it is. It's also not a stop-gap album or a cantractual obligation. It's more to do with my love for this music and style" said Liam. Here's the full Dirtchamber Sessions Volume One track listing:

The Dirtchamber Mix containend a few uncredited songs. 'Intro Beats' are actually sampled from a compilation 'Ultimate Breaks & Beats Volume 9' by Billy Squier. Between 'Sport' and 'Give The Drummer Some' there's a part from a song called 'Shangri La' performed by Le Pregunta. In the 'Section 2' there's a drum sample from Run DMC's 'Sucker MC's' (playing over 'How High'). The sratches on 'Section 3' (playing over '(The Best Part Of) Breaking Up') are from 'Peter Piper' also performed by Run DMC. In the album booklet it says that the 'Section 1' would contain Rasmus' 'Tonto's Release', but there's a mistake in the album booklet. The song actually is 'Punk Shock'. Between Herbie Hancock and The 45 King there are small clips from Prodigy's very own 'Smack My Bitch Up' and 'Molotov Bitch'.

Two articles about Liam DJ mix album are available on Mindblowing Network. One is from Select Magazine
February 1999 and the other from Select March 1999.

    Records

The commercial mix was released by XL-Recordings in February 1999 on CD (XLCD 128) and cassette (XLMC 128). The original Breezeblock mix started to appear on several CD-R copies soon after Liam decided to release the mix. Liam did a special promo mix which was probably meant to be released as a commercial release but the mix was later changed. The whole promo mix is only available on this CD-R copy made by Masterpiece Masterings and XL Recordings and only 25 copies were made. Intercord, Prodigy's former German record label, made 20 minutes out-take promo. Intercord also made a CD-R promo called 'Interview Zu: The Dirtchamber Sessions Volume One' which has an interview with Liam on it. Intercord also made a commercial release (Intercord CD, INT 4 84612 2). There's also another 20 minutes out-take promo made by Masterpiece Masterings. French record company Delabel made a promo CD (DE 4605) which came in cardsleeve and later released the compilation commercially (Delabel CD, 7243 847428 2 9). The record was released in the Netherlands by Play It Again Sam on CD (900.1999.26 in digipak, 900.1999.20 in jewelcase). The record was also released by Guts Records (GAT-0008). The record was released in the USA by Beggars Banquet. There was also a promotional interview CD in the USA called 'The Dirtchamber Sessions Volume One - Liam Howlett The Interview' (XL Recordings, 49D30317) A promo interview CD (LHPRO01) was made out of Liam's Breezeblock interview. The promo came in jewelcase, purple disc and no sleeves.
