Pop star Robbie Williams has fallen victim to a sneak thief who went on a £5000 spending spree with his credit card. The singer was on a shopping trip to New York when the card snatcher struck. The thief nabbed his gold credit card while the Millenium star was trying on expensive shoes in Gucci's top-of-the-range Fifth Avenue store. Then the card - from posh people's band Coutts - used to buy designer clothes, shoes, and jewllery from the shops and boutiques on Madison and Fifth Avenue. It happened during a break on 25-year-old Robbie's US tour. Detectives are still trying to add up the total spent on the card but say it was at least $8000 - about £5000. They were called after Robbie reported the loss to the band based in London. The card is still missing and police have warned New York shopes to be on the alert in case it is used again. A New York police spokesman said: "We have been asked to locate a Coutts card belonging to a Robert Peter Williams and whoever now is using it to purchase items." As far as we know after checking various retailers, about $8000 is involved but the plastic, as far as we know, has not yet been recovered yet. The owner is unknown over here but we are assured he's a VIP in Britain, some kind of musician or singer." Millionaire Robbie, hwo recently sealed a £2million deal to promote Pepsi, may have to pay the bill if he failed to report the theft promptly or its loss was down to his negligence. A Coutts spokesman said: "If it is found to be lost as a result of fraud or negligence, then the client may be liable." The police spokesman said Robbie's gold card had been missing for almost a week before a stop was put on it. The amount spent could be more than £20,000. The £5000 that has so far appeared on the bank's computer was spent in the first two days the card was missing. More bills are expected he said. (Chandler and Key)-- Megastar
