Interesting project coming from Slovakia, country of great avantgarde revelations like LAHKA MUZA. The band invest in a kind of progressive metal with intense guitar and a curious vocal that remember in some moments the vocals from the pop band New Order and in others the vocals from Marillion's first albuns (Fish), the bassist is an incredible instrumentist and the musics are great, mixing prog parts in the line of Fates Warning with heavy touches. ANHEAD - Phases (MCD - Self Produced - Czech Republic).

Good surprise of new avantgarde doom metal, Anhead present us their personal melodic, atmospheric doom metal in this independent release. Six compositions very inpired where the contrast between the sweetness of Laviekova female vocals & the instrospection of Gothard clean/guttural vocals are the highlight. The instrumental are very influenced by bands like ASHES YOU LEAVE and 3TH & THE MORTAL. The best songs of the work are "Relief" & "Melancholy", when the sound are more personal. AZAGHAL - Mustamaa (CD - Iso666 - Finlland).

The LP Mustamaa was released by the label Melancholy promotion limited in 300 copies, the album is a black metal cult item now and the greek label ISO666 re-released it on CD now, Azaghal play a kind of black metal that we named true dark black metal, the guitars are heavy but it create interesting melodies all time, the vocals are crude, in the line of BATHORY, some musics have a kind of chorus vocals that create a real medieval atmosphere. All musics are singed in the original language of the band, the best tracks: "Kuolema Kristukselle", "Juudas" & "Kosto". The sound production isn't good but the energy is great. AZOTIC REIGN - Abstract Maledictions (CD - Self Produced - Sweden).

The story of AZOTIC REIGN begin in 1989 and the first band's name was "Black Crusader", in 1991 the band change its name  and embrace its more powerful influences: METALLICA, SLAYER, TESTAMENT, KREATOR & DESTRUCTION and recorded the first demo, in the next 10 years the band recorded various demos and the MCD "Beyond The Blood" but the first full-lenght "Abstract Maledictions" was released only in 2000, for us is very strange that AZOTIC REIGN didn't sign with a great label, because the thrash metal atack of the band is very inspired and creative, this album is a incredible "Pandora's Box" of ripping riffs, powerful guitar duets and real deep thrash vocals in the line of legends like  OVERKILL & ARTILLERY, songs like "The Fall of Humanity", "The Depths of the Shadow" &  the epic climatic "The House By The Ancient Cemetery" (in the end of the CD we listened a creepy  voyage...) are marvelous thrash metal hymns for eternity!! BEFORE EDEN - Before Eden (CD - Hellion Records - Brazil).

those band is a new revelation of brazilian "Epic Melodic Prog Metal" and this debut album is a good surprise, Before Eden drink the same wine of bands like Stratovarious, Dream Theater, Symphony X & Kamelot but the band isn't a clone, their sound is very personal with a great balance of melodies and heavy mid-tempos, all musicians are good but the prominences of the band are JUliano Scharf (a magician of the keyboard atmospheres) & Alessandro Kotlinsky (master of epic riffs). Only 7 good compositions, the bests in our  opinion are: "Elemental Master", "Space Labyrinth" and the title track (an epic opus with 8 minutes!). BLACK MASS - To Fly with Demons (CD - Elegy Records - USA).

Another good north american true black metal band, the crudeness of the musical proposal of Black Mass pu the band beside other americans acts like EZURATE, KULT OV AZAZEL & SATHANAS. The 3 members of the band have strongh influence of  brutal death metal and in some moments we can listen echoes of CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEEDS OF FLESH, SLAYER & INCANTATION. The corpse painting is very curious, a mix of 80-ies thrash metal acts with new melodic black metal bands, some musics have morbid deep introduction with creepy sounds. BYRD - Flying Beyond the 9 - (CD - Lion Music - USA).

The cover picture and CD artwork make us remember the 80's guitar albums (Malmsteen, Beck, etc.) and we think: "This is another tiresome  "ego guitar" album!" But it is not true, this is a wonderful album! The legendary guitar hero James Byrd left his ego sideways and created  beautiful compositions replete of originals orchestrated arrangements, creating epic climates for the excellent 9 compositions that compose this CD. Some composition have a progressive  atmosphere mixed with classic touches, the good vocals of Michael James Flatters give the perfect balance to the Byrd guitars. The cover art of this release is simple marvelous,  a strongh and detailed illustration of a future warrior, another prominence is the presence of the guest musician Necrobutcher from the famous european true black metal act MAYHEM in an impressive cover o f Deathcrush! The music of the band is a black death metal with influences of brutal death acts like CANNIBAL CORPSE & DEEDS OF FLESH mixed with true black metal influences in the line of MAYHEM, DARK THRONE. Sometimes the vocalis sing in the RAP way and it sound bad, because  By The Grief's musical difference is the melodic form that the guitars sound, the RAPPER vocals fucked great powerful melodic moments... DELPHT - Screams of Ice (CD - Die Harrd Records - Brazil).

Simply MARVELOUS, we don't believe that is a debut album, because the epic power metal played by DELPH in "Screams of Ice" is a perfect mix of ingredients that put all great bands of the style in the top! DFA made a impressive instrumental progressive rock with various kind of fusions, when we listen this album we can feel touches of jazz, new age, world music and classic music, very experimental voyages captained by the intense guitars of Silvio Minella. 6 compositions in more than 60 minutes, this album was recorded in NEARFEST (North East Art Rock Festival) in Pennsylvania (june the 2000), the production is great and the package too (a beautiful digipack with avantgarde design). The great american label Moonjune released this incredible 77 minutes of progressive feelings!!! This album is an original sequence of extreme inspirated experimental prog music, echoes of 70's progressive rock, Jethro Tull, King Crimsom, Genesis, Eletro acoustic music, jazz fusion and another good references give to this live album a place in the list of the best live prog albums of the music history. The musicians touch our souls with the perfect mix of technique and feeling, the guitars of Stefano Marelli are marvelous and the drummers work is very sensitive, 8 intense songs, the prominences are "Orizzonte Degli Eventi" ( beautiful sweet flutes) & "Phaedra". The album was recorded in the summer of 1997 in an american concert but it was released only now (2001). This is a strange act coming from germany, a curious mix of thrash, death , true heavy metal & nonsense vocals, good work, with a great sense of originality, an oasis in the sea of musical clones of the actual world metal scene!! Some parts sounds like a musical joke, like the introduction of "Deutschland", but another are raw intense death metal like the first "Auf der Jagd" (a metaphoric track about wolves), oh, yes, the band singing in german language, but in the booklet they put an little review about the meaning of the lyrics.The picture of the cover is another strange surprise (united with the back cover!). Green Carnation is a kind of band project captained by the genious mind of TCHORT (that played bass in EMPEROR), this is the second full-lenght of the band and Tchort count with a fabulous group of guest musicians: opera choir, children's choir, a string ensemble, a sitar, a sax, and another elements that contribue to create a spetacular dream atmosphere to this masterpiece of avantgarde heavy metal. The logo art work have guns and bullets, the members  dress camouflaged clothes of the army, and the style of the music is named War Death Metal, the titles of the songs take us for the interior of the battle: "Born in a Day of War", "The Day of Battle" and "If I Should Die"... in times of those grotesque war "against terrorism" the agressive music of GURKKHAS is the perfect hymn to Talebans soldiers...but they can't hear music... Yeah! This is real 80's  heavy metal, pure, energetic, climatic and simple, if you love icons like AC/DC, TWISTED SISTER, MOTLEY CRUE, FASTER PUSSYCAT, KISS, Jarra will be the next great thing in your life!!! The female vocalist Kathie Jarra is the band leader and the responsible of the compositions beside Johnny Russian (Lead Guitar), the musics are powerful and inspirated, the sound of the band is a impressive mix of MOTLEY CRUE glam sound of good times with  JUDAS PRIEST, Kathie has a personal vocal with a good balance of power & melody, creating interesting songs like "Pain", "Indian War Love Song"(The best of the album with heavy guitars and intense vocals!) & "Two Evils". LARS ERIC MATTSSON - Eternity (CD - Lion Music - Finland ).

Lars is a kind of guitar hero that has a place in the hall of   european cult musics, "Eternity" was recorded in 1988 with low quality but the album won the recognition of all guitar hard rock lovers. The Label Lion Music re-released now the album and all songs are recorded again and now the guitarrist count with the inpirated vocals of Bjorn Lodin, a great revelation of hard rock with a emblem voice in the line of Rod Stewart.
