The band SENGAYA was born in 1998 and it is a great revelation of prog metal rock coming from Germany. The impressive debut album "Metamorphosis", self-released, is a masterpiece of prog atmospheres, variated guitar climates and beautiful vocals. Prog Metal without virtuous boring musics, only true feelings here! Krepuskulum interviewed the band.

KREPUSKULUM: Talk to us about the band's tragectory. Do you live of your music or do you have other jobs?

Roland: It would beautiful be. No, no, we cannot live on it. Marcus and Stefan go to work part-time in a supermarket. I am the only one this one follows a regulated work for the car company BMW. Andreas gives at the same time guitar lessons.

Andreas Fechter is a majestic guitar man with a intense melodic sense.Talk to us about the creative process to create your riffs and solos.

Andreas: Thank you for the compliment. The melody always was and is more important for me than the purely technical side of the music.You cannot force a terrific melody, though. Till one has developed a roughly useable idea be able to pass already some hours are gone there.

What are the difficulties to release an independent CD like "METAMORPHOSIS"? How has been the reception of your work? Do you have some labels interested in your next release?

Andreas: The difficulty lies that into this nowadays the standard lies with the productions very high. Produced himself you must agree to compromises with the Sound and the effort. The reactions were for the most part positive, that one of not quite so profesionelle Sound was just found fault with sometimes, though.

Roland: The difficulties are the marketing in my view. We have our own little studio in our test room and so we only we had to pay for the mastering and the dublicating. I have sent the album to all possible magazines and online magazines after this. Through this we also have come to our sales deal. Unfortunately, the Guy is rather unreliable and this I have the suspicion we have been taken the piss. We have no idea whether and how much we have sold. Our musical development goes the "Metamorphosis" anyway is no longer representative in the direction, though and we want to take a new direction with the next album. For this we haven't contacted any labels yet, but want to make this and hope the best in the next future.

How do you define your music ? What do you think about musical styles?

Andreas: "Metamorphosis" lay obviously in the direction of the Prog skirt. It is the problem, though, that one has it very heavily with this music style in the music industry. We have therefore decided to establish our songs in the alternative skirt area more to be able to gain a foothold more easily.Musical styles are to be able to put in order around a band apparently importantly to the audience. We don't find this drawer thinking so good since one is put in order very fast wrongly.

Roland: We have reached an agreement within the band to describe our style with alternative skirt. This lets the room to move fill this one out with our music. I otherwise don't have something against any classifications although sometimes exaggerated already very much is. I don't care no matter how the music calls itself, main thing in the end I like it, however.

Talk us a little about the graphic aspects of the CD. Who did have the idea to put these Dali´s picture on the cover? What those image represent for you?

Andreas: The idea is from our Dali enthusiast Roland. How the name of the picture (Metamorphosis de Narcisse) already says it is all about a transformation.

Roland: Enthusiast would be exaggerated. I have a retrospective at home about Dali and I already find his pictures very stimulating. We then also have leafed through this book on the search for a cover and have met with this picture. We had a name for the instrumental after everybody has liked it and we took it for the title on the album.

What do you think about bands like DREAM TEATHER and STRATOVARIUS that are accused of virtuosos for some fans and press?

Andreas: Dream Theater and Stratovarius are out liturgy bands for the one no more toppen can actually.

Roland: I have seen both bands live and was enthusiastic every time. Stratovarius so completely aren't my case on CD, though.

Sometimes we can listen echoes of melodic & power metal and progressive rock in SENGAYA´s music. Do you like melodic metal, what do you think about bands as ANGRA, SHAMAN & HAMMERFALL?

Roland: The Metal influence is still clearly recognizable on "Metamorphosis", however, doesn't meet our style any more. I like Angra personally very much. Unfortunately, I don't know Shaman I only know, that shall this be the follow-up band of Angra members got out. Hammerfall is a Helloween-copy and a cheap mass-produced item for me. This is my personal opinion, though and I want tretten too close to nobody with that. The other members don't hear metal very often so that they don't know one of these bands.

"Way of Ecstasy" & "Behind the Myths" are great songs! Talk to us a little about the inspiration behind the lyrics of these musics.

Stefan: In "Way of ecstacy" it is all about that his life shall itself clear about it for every man get contentedly and balancedly arrangedly like him. It only doesn't make this to any more fun to make thoughts to himself about this apparently nowadays.

"Behind the myths" are fantasy-lyrics. Here man shall have a good look at the life and the death.

You release now a promo CD to saw your new musics to the press, in new songs like "My Greatest" the band give a new direction to the music, it´s a kind of pop rock ballad. Do you agree with me? What are the band´s proposal to the next album?

Andreas: Correctly, but not only pop rock ballad also other styles are processed again, though. The new album will get rather catchier.

Roland: We aren't a metalband any longer, sorry...
