SKYWISE - INTERVIEW

8skywise2.jpg (8275 bytes)SKYWISE - YEAHHHHHH!!!! This is the new psychedelic 70's rock'in'metal atack!!! If you love Tomy Iommi riffs, 70's astral keyboards, psychedelic cosmic vocals and stoner atmospheres this is your new gods!!! Another great act coming from Italy, one of the best european metal scenes now, SKYWISE sound like a good mix of Black Sabbath & HAWKWIND!! Krepuskulum Interviewed the band.

KREPUSKULUM: Talk to us about the band's beginning. Why do you play this kind of music?

We started in ’98, each of us had played in different bands covering all kinds of extreme music. Me (Francesco) and Emiliano were long time friends and had played in the same band for a while. At those times we were kind of re-discovering the good ol’ classics of the 70s and thought that in the end that was the real thing, Sabbaths, Hawkwind, etc. …and that’s the way it started…

Do you believe that the name "Stoner Metal" is a good name for your style of music?

Labels can be useful to describe a style, call us whatever you like (Stoner Metal, heavy Doom, Heavy Psych…) as long as it can help readers to understand the kind of music we play.

In the 70's this kind of music was baptized of "Psychedelic" and one of the best bands was HAWKWIND (the first band of Lemmy), when I listened SKYWISE I remember the best moments of HAWKWIND. Do you like these band? Is it one of your influences?

Wow! You’re paying us a great compliment! Hawkwind are by far one of our greatest influence, we recently added a steady moog & synth player to try to achieve that brainstorm/Psychedelic feeling you get when you see Hawkwind live (I’ve seen them twice) without renouncing to heavy guitar mayhem… In the future we’d love to become a sort of collective band with people comin’ on stage and doing their stuff, playing, dancing, acting miming, transforming our show into something more than a simple rock gig, just like Hawkwind used to do.

What is the meaning of the name SKYWISE for you?

Actually, it is the name of a starship travelling to the tenth moon of Saturn in search of an ancient form of E.T. life.

Psychedelic music was famous in 70's, do you believe that this kind of music is dated now?

Nowadays any kind of music is "dated" after two years, we never cared about trends and always played what we liked. Lots of young kids still listen to bands like the Sabbaths or Blue Cheer or Jimy Hendrix, now you tell me… are they dated or eternal?

The lyrics of the band are very interesting, in it we talk about various things with personality, creativity and sometimes hirony, Talk about the inspiration to write songs like "Earth 2012", "My Rotten Kingdom" & "The Ghastly Workshop of Hiram Kyram"?

Inspiration as usual comes from things happening around us, people we meet, drugs, women, things we read…. Both Earth ant Workshop though are inspired by comic books like Earth X (READ IT!) by Alex Ross and From Hell by the astounding genius of Alan Moore. Kingdom was written in a time when all of us were completely penniless, hopeless, and unemployed (not that things changed much recently, ah, ah) and the lyric resents of the gloomy hunger we felt those days.

What are the reception of your debut album "Morning Star"??

Still too early to say, reviews of the promo are excellent but we haven’t got data regarding the orders, we are very optimistic, though.

The Italian Metalic scene rise to the world now. What are the 5 best italian bands in your opinion?

There are very many good bands and it’s difficult to say which are the best five bands, so I’ll name some of the most popular: Rhapsody, Death SS, Paul Chain, Novembre, Undertakers (true brothers/real motherfuckers), White Skull and many more. There are also some some good stoner bands, That’s all Folks, Ufomammut, EXP, Loosin’all Frequencies….

Do you plan a tour for the debut album? Talk to us about SKYWISE gigs.

We hope to play some gigs in Europe, we’re working at it. We just had two gigs in a couple of towns in the south of Italy. They were pretty much fun, we had just met Emi, the new synth player and with just one rehearsal we kicked him on stage in this sort of mini-tour. People describe our gigs as pretty intense and quite loud, too. We play witthout interruption for more than an hour, and very often we jam for 20 minutes and more if the feeling is good…If you’ll ever come to one of our gigs, be prepared to a total brainstorm aggression….
