CORPSEVOMIT - INTERVIEW

8corpse1.jpg (14229 bytes)CORPSEVOMIT - From the occult flames of purulent underground death metal  music coming the legendary american act Corpsevomit, an intense nightmare   born to rape our ears and fucked our souls give to us a new masterpiece, the album "RAPING THE EARS OF THOSE ABOVE". Krepuskulum interviewed the screams man MATTHEW McClelland.

KREPUSKULUM:  Talk to us about the abortion of the CORPSEVOMIT. What is the reason to play this furious kind of music??

MATTHEW MCCLELLAND: Corpsevomit was aborted from the normal way things are thought to be back in 1993. We shun media music made to sell to the mass public. We break all the rules to form a feeling. We play this form of music for our own selves and sanity. In a world of chaos, anger builds and must be released. Corpsevomit is the name of our release of anger. We truly rape the ears of those who think is above us- media mass public.

The new album is a hole of hate, a fleshcuttingmachine. Where come from this intense hate and nihilism behind your music ?

Every day life is filled with chaos, Ignorance, death, racism, and greed. Being in a big city, I see this every day. It tends to build up inside and Corpsevomit is how we deal with it. After we play I feel like a weight has been lifted from my chest. One thing has held up for the eight some years that I’ve been in this band, there are always plenty of things to piss you off. Hatred is flourishing.

Some lyrics of this album talk about corpse decomposition like the agressive "MAGGOT LAMB", Why do you have atracttion for this kind of theme?? Do you like the first album of CARCASS? The SPLATTER music is an genuine  style of metal??

Actually, to me, the lyrics of Maggot Lamb are a contradiction of itself. That’s what I think most religions are. The song Maggot Lamb in my mind is Mocking the Divine. When you listened to it you thought of corpse decomposition. That’s another thing Corpsevomit is about. Our lyrics are so vague that one can see it in a different way than another person one listened to it with. We have always strayed away from typical Gore lyrics. None of us are horror movie freaks. Although I am a fan of Cannibal Corpse I have no desire to play their style. That’s their thing. Most people automatically assume that we are a gore band because of our name. Which isn’t the case. I think most of our fans have either seen us live or play an instrument. Most of our musick flies over peoples heads. As far as Carcass and other Splatter types of grind bands, I love it. But there is good and bad. Symphonies of Sickness remains one of my favorite albums of all time.

In your opinion what are the best 10 albums of the extreme metal music history and what are the 5 best extreme bands now?

Well off the top of my head some of my favorite Extremetal of all time would be in no particular order: Carcass- Symphonies of Sickness, Napalm death- Harmony Corruption, Repulsion- any, Macabre-any, Terrorizer- World downfall, Incantation- Onward to Golgotha, Immolation- Dawn of possession, Suffocation- any, Slayer- Hell Awaits, Morbid Angel- Alters of Madness. Some of my favorite extremetal bands today would be Cephalic Carnage, Deeds of Flesh, Cryptopsy, Dilinger Escape plan, and Summon.

Do you like another styles of metal as Melodic (Helloween, Stratovarious), Thrash (Metallica, Testament), prog metal (Dream Teather) and the new fashion of melodic black metal ( Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth)?

I like all styles of metal but not all the bands. Like I said before, there is good and bad music in all styles. I grew up listening to The Exploited, Dead Kennedy’s, Sex Pistols, DRI, Fugazi, Metallica, Testament, Exodus, Megadeth, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Flotsam and Jetsam and so on. AS time went on the crazier the music got. I like all kinds of music from Classical to grind core.

The cover illustration of the new album is very interesting and intense, who are the artist that create it ? What is the meaning of the illustration??

A friend of ours, Mike Beasley, did the cover Art. He did a great job considering that we gave him a whole big list of what we wanted to be in our scene of mass destruction. We wanted it to be a scene of chaos and destruction ruled by the unknown. We just gave him a list and told him to try and fit as much as he could into the painting. He is a great artist. He made the cover come out better than we imagined. Plus that is the first time that he used oil paint. Any one can contact him through us.

The USA is a country dominated by the musical fashion created by MTV. Is hard to play underground death metal in your country?

I think that it is, because every one is trying to be like who ever is popular like Korn and Disturbed. It’s flooded. And to me that is mass media’s version of metal. So when we bust loose playing crazy fast riffs people put it off as noise but to me its lots and lots of practice to play what we play. That’s why it’s frustrating playing music you love. And there are people in the same city doing very well for them selves playing easy shit. We play the most shunned form of musick on the planet.

Do you live of your music? If not what are your another activities??

We don’t even come close to living off our musick. We all have jobs we wish we didn’t need. It just adds on to the long list of shit that pisses us off. We drink alcohol, smoke, and Rage metal in whatever time we have. Time is my worst enemy.

In the new album we can listen a great mix and production, the musical technique and furious feeling have a perfect balance. Do you work with a  musical producer?

No we don’t work with a producer. We went to Chris Djuricic at Studio One in Wisconsin USA. He really knows what he is doing and he’s not afraid to tell you if he thinks something sounds wrong or off. Which is one of the things that set him apart from the rest. He knows metal. He has recorded with bands like Disinter (US), Origin, Incestuous, and Cum Christ to name a few. We also went to Monster Disc here in Chicago to do the mastering. They are very Professional and do the job right. Having a different person master it also adds to the sound and that’s why Chris refuses to master his own engineer work. This album sounds the best that we’ve ever done.

Talk to us about the plans to the "RAPING THE EARS OF THOSE ABOVE" tour   and gigs.

Right now we are playing any shows that come our way including a live show on the Radio here in Illinois. We want to tour as much as possible but nothing has come up. We need to support some one for it to be a success at this point. We hope to rape your ears in the future!
