DEPRESSION - INTERVIEW
This
is a fabulous grindcore death act come from the more deep
germany underground hole! The band started in 1989 and raped the ears of
lunatic grindcoreans in more than 10 releases (demos, Eps, Split CDs and
Albums), now they killed our brains with the new kataklism “ Zur Stille
Finden”, a split CD with HAEMORRAGE released by the legendary label CUDGEL
Agency. Krepuskulum interviewed KAI (guitars, bass, drums).
KREPUSKULUM - You play grindcore in the last 12 years. What is the reason to play this purulent kind of music all that time?
KAI: First of all, a big HELLO to you and all readers of Krepuskulum!! Cheers!
Well, we play Grindcore, but not just Grindcore. It is a mix between Grindcore
and Death Metal, and we LOVE this style of music from our bottoms of our
hearts!!! So we play it for twelve years now!! This is the music DEPRESSION
stands for, and it will ever be this way!
Only two of your releases had the title in English; the others are
titled in German, why??
Two releases are in English?? That's new for me, I only know the split-Tape with
Hierba with the English title, and that is mostly the
title of Hierba, not DEPRESSION. So please let me know which other title
you mean!? We use these German titles from the very beginning of DEPRESSION back
in 1989. At that time years ago it was something new, something original. So I
had German titles for a release, but English titles for the songs and English
lyrics. With the Black metal boom, a lot of bands have titles in German or
even in their mother-language. So it is not special anymore. But for DEPRESSION
it is tradition, so we will keep on doing this.
Excuse
our ignorance but what are the meaning of the expression "Zur Stille
Finden" (the name of the new split-CD with Haemorrhage)?
In English it means "Find the Silence". It's a phrase from
meditation. You have to calm down and listen to the silence. In the noise
and polluted times nowadays, it is very important to find some moments of
silence from time to time. It is to refresh your mind. And the perfect way to do
this is to listen to DEPRESSION, haha!"
In the band's info-sheet you wrote the sentence: " We don't care if you
think that DEPRESSION isn't very original or new, because we play the music we
want to play!! Nothing Else! "This is a proof of your musical option and
conscience. Were come from this intense love for the grindcore music?
To be honest, I don't know, haha! Well, this kind of music (also brutal Death
Metal) is absolutely the kind of music I love! The extremity and the brutality
satisfy my heart. It is not only listening to some noise, it is a dedication and
a life-philosophy. My point of view to the world, society and stuff like that is
inspired by Grindcore/Death Metal Music. I write this sentence in the info,
because some people say that the music from DEPRESSION is boring and that it is
already played by other bands years before. But that is exactly want we
want to do!!! We are dedicated to the pure and old-school Death/Grind, the way
it was played in the late 80ies/early 90ies. But these people think that
we don't have new ideas, but that was never the intention from DEPRESSION.
Do you listen another kind of metal music like Black Metal, Power Metal,
Melodic Metal?
Yes, I listen to other kinds of Metal. Of course Death Metal. That is the
music I like, besides this a couple of Black metal bands, like
Vintersemestre, Judas Iscariot, old Immortal, Darkthrone, Dark Funeral, etc....I
also listen to some old-school Speed and Thrash Metal, like Sodom or something
like that. As I started with listening to Metal, I listen to Heavy Metal
and Power Metal, but that is a long time ago. Besides Metal I listen to
Punkrock, Stonerrock and Crustcore.
What do you think about metal bands that create musical fusions with
RAP, ELECTRONIC, FOLK and another labels??
I don't care. Well, if they wanna do so, they should. I do not hate it and it is
good that there are bands around who are doing something different and try to
open horizons. But it is not my cup of tea. I am more into the old-school way
with DEPRESSION. We will never change our path and DEPRESSION will always stay
as an underground-band with the musical direction of groovy Death/Grind!! The
freaks out there should know what they buy when the get a DEPRESSION record.
The lyrics of DEPRESSION had a kind of conscience that we didn't see in bands
of the style like "No need for a Good". For you what is the importance
of the lyrics to your music?
To be honest, the music is much more important than the lyrics. Our lyrics
aren't too personal, they are dealing with all kind of different topics
like society, pollution, relationship, fantasy, fun, religion, gore...
they are not that important for DEPRESSION and I suppose even not very
good, ha,ha. DEPRESSION should stand for cool and groovy Death/Grind, nothing
else. We don't want to get an image because of our lyrics. The vocals are just
other instruments.
The vocals of DEPRESSION are very powerful and purulent, this is one of the
great marks of the band, they create a perfect balance with the guitar riffs
influenced by American brutal death metal, are we right??
Thanks for the nice words about DEPRESSION and the vocals. I'm glad you
like it. Well, my guitar playing and the guitar sound are more influenced
by old-school Swedish Death Metal like Grave, Dismember, Entombed and Carnage.
We don't sound like Swedish bands, but I like their sound more than the American
way. It is too clean for me and not raw enough. The vocals should sound
brutal and deep, but not only pure noise. I suppose that Marc and Ron do their
job very well, haha!
The grindcore music has an intense hate by the system and humanity in
your origin, are you nihilists? Do you believe in the future of human
race?
Well,
I'm not a Nihilist. Human life can be very funny and enjoyable. I like my
living and there are a lot of things that makes my
day cool. The aggressively and hate in grindcore music is the best way to
have a valve to let the bad things out, haha! I suppose the human race is
digging its own grave. They destroy nature and they have too many evil feelings
in their soul, so one day they will kill the planet!
In your opinion what are the best 10 albums of the grindcore music history
and what are the 10 best grindcore acts now?
Oh, that´s difficult! Hhmm... I would say:
1. Napalm Death "From Enslavement to Obliteration"
2. Terrorizer "World Downfall"
3. Necrony "Pathological Performances"
4. Rot "Cruel Face of Life"
5. Blood "Mental Conflicts"
6. Agathocles "Razor Sharp Daggers"
7. Phobia "Return to Desolation"
8. S.O.D. "Speak English or die"
9. Anal Cunt "Morbid Florist"
10. Depression "Chronische Depression" (haha!).
I think not all of these albums are pure Grindcore, but I specially like
Death/Grind the most. And too many cool Grind bands to mention here...sorry.
You released a split CD with Brazilian grindcore gods ROT. Do you know
the extreme Brazilian scene??
I'm not sure... of course I know Rot, and Krisiun, Rebaellium, Sarcófago, Lymphatic
Phlegm, Vomito, Mental Horror and so on, but I
suppose there are a lot more great and brutal Bands around in Brazil, right?! I
like the style from Brazilian bands a lot!!"
Give us your last words to the worldwide grindcore maniacs!
Thanks a lot to you, my friend, for this great interview! I hope you and all readers
from Krepuskulum have enjoyed these lines as I did! If you like old-school
groovy Death/Grind check out DEPRESSION and email me: depression@gmx.li
